[Verse 1 – childhood, father never came back] When I was just a tiny rat, curled up where the pipes go black, Mama said, “Your father’s brave, he’ll bring us food, he’ll find a way.” He took a breath and slipped inside the human kitchen, open wide, said, “There’s a dish, it’s ratatouille, for you, my love, for all of you.” We waited till the pipes ran cold, twelve small shadows, growing old, counted drips and counted days… he never came back through that maze. [Chorus 1 – his vow] Forbidden ratatui, a word that tasted bright, a promise in the darkness, a story told at night. If danger is the ticket to keep the hunger down, I’ll walk the same damned tunnels where my old man fucking drowned. [Verse 2 – grown rat in the kitchen] Now I’ve got twelve little ones, and one soft wife with tired lungs, she says, “We’ll live on crumbs again, please don’t go where your father went.” But I can smell it through the vents, roasted dreams and vegetables, oil and herbs and something warm, a different world beyond our storm. I dodge the poison, dodge the steel, traps that snap with hungry teeth, hear a low, mean purring growl, see a cat blocking the hall. My heart is pounding in my ears, every whisker stiff with fear, but there it is upon the tray: a human’s meal, one plate away. [Pre-Chorus 2 – movement, “we’re fucked” moment] My paws are shaking on the tile, every shadow looks hostile, hunger screams, “Just take the hit,” my brain whispers, “This looks like shit.” I’m close enough to feel the steam, to almost taste my children’s dream, I reach out for that perfect bite… and something fucking moves, right side. [Verse 3 – in the nest, wife waiting] Back in the nest, the pipes run thin, she curls her tail around our kin, twelve small bellies pressing in, and silence buzzing on her skin. She checks the crack in concrete twice, then talks to ghosts to stay alive, “He said he’d bring us something real, but they all say that when they leave.” She tells the kids, “Your dad is strong, he’ll come back soon, it won’t be long,” but when their little eyes are shut, she swears, “I think he just gave up.” [Rat Choir – nest, hopeful] Ra-ta-ta, ra-ta-tui, Daddy’s bringing food for me. Ra-ta-ta, ra-ta-tui, faith is all we’ve ever seen. [Chorus 2 – her bitter version] Forbidden ratatui, a bedtime fairy tale, they chase a painted picture and mostly fucking fail. If bravery means leaving and never coming back, then call me coward, I’d stay here, hold tight to what we have. [Verse 4 – death on the kitchen floor] Back in the kitchen, time goes thin, the world turns white and closes in, a falling shadow, sudden weight, the slipper comes down hard and late. It hits my side, explodes my breath, a private little kind of death, no trumpet, no heroic sound, just my body on cold ground. The smell of ratatouille bleeds into the copper of my needs, I see my father in the glare, another stain that’s always there. Two quiet bodies, same cold stone, two foolish heroes dying alone, no songs, no names carved in the wall, just kitchen rags that wipe us all. [Bridge – last thoughts] I think about my children’s eyes, my patient wife, her tired sighs, I wish I’d told her, one last time, this wasn’t just another lie. If love is just a risk you take with everything you can’t protect, then this small life I had to spend was never really mine to keep. [Final Chorus – ghost voice, summary] Forbidden ratatui was never meant for us, a story written by the tall to dress our hunger up. We wait, we hope, we gamble, we run and then we fall, they clear the floor at closing time and never think of us at all. Forbidden ratatui, I’m sorry that I tried, I leave you only absence and a colder place inside. [Rat Choir – ghost echo] Ra-ta-ta, ra-ta-tui, no more steps and no more shoes. Ra-ta-ta, ra-ta-tui, empty pipes remember you.
