Lyrics: Hexgirl. Copyright © 2026 Hexgirl. All rights reserved. The mandrake (Mandragora) is a poisonous medicinal plant whose often human-shaped root has fascinated people since ancient times. In European folklore, it became a legendary magical root surrounded by myths and superstition. This song tells the legend "The Alraun" as recorded by the Brothers Grimm. The English translation follows after the German lyrics. _____________________________________________________ ENGLISH [Verse 1] It is said that the mandrake thrives beneath the gallows And grants its master prosperity and protection. With its broad leaves it blooms yellow in the morning light, But whoever pulls it from the earth themselves cannot escape death. [Pre-Chorus 1] Its scream is horrifying; it chills one to the bone. Whoever wishes to survive must be clever and cunning. [Chorus] Mandrake, Mandrake Whoever follows your rules will fare well in life, But whoever disregards them will know no good fortune. [Verse 2] On Friday one goes to the gallows field before sunrise, With one's ears tightly plugged with cotton, wax, or pitch. Accompanied by a black dog without a single spot, One makes three signs of the cross, for the custom has its purpose. [Pre-Chorus 2] The soil is dug away all around down to the root, Then it is time to dare the next step. [Chorus] Mandrake, Mandrake Whoever follows your rules will fare well in life, But whoever disregards them will know no good fortune. [Verse 3] The root is tied firmly to the dog's tail with a cord, A piece of bread quickly lures the dog away without protest. It pulls the mandrake from the earth, and a scream rings out; The faithful dog falls dead to the ground—its life has come to an end. [Pre-Chorus 3] The mandrake is then washed clean with red wine, Wrapped in white and red silk, it rests in a little box. [Chorus] Mandrake, Mandrake Whoever follows your rules will fare well in life, But whoever disregards them will know no good fortune. [Verse 4] Every Friday it is bathed; at the new moon it is given a little shirt. If one asks it about the future, it alone knows the answer. It brings prosperity and protection and doubles the money overnight. If it is never given too much at once, its magical power remains. [Bridge] When the master dies, the youngest son inherits the mandrake. He places bread and money in his father's grave as tradition demands. If the heir dies before the father, it passes to the eldest son, Yet bread and money still accompany the youngest to his final rest. [Chorus] Mandrake, Mandrake Whoever follows your rules will fare well in life, But whoever disregards them will know no good fortune.
