Ghost Lady in Red (Chapter 1) Behind the Machine
My truck has broken down. In the middle of Sam’s Hill Nowhere. Sign says “Gas Station, One Mile”. So, I guess I’m walking. I am somewhere in Utah. That’s about all I know. I’ve been driving all night and day. And now, I’m not sure where I’ve gotten to. The air here is dry, still, and has the lingering stench of salty dead flies. I’m not sure why anyone would even come here. It sure isn’t pleasant. To say the least. “Ah!”, there it is. I see the station in sight now. Thank God! I should have brought more water. It is nearly unbearable out here. “Oh wow, okay.” It looks like this place hasn’t been used in years. Old, worn out, neon signs. Rusty metal siding and a thick layer of dust on everything. I can’t even see inside the windows. The front door is locked and completely boarded shut. I wonder if there are any restrooms around back. Or possibly another way in. Walking around the side of the building. Lay rusted out bicycles and junk cars that appear to be from the 1950’s. All locked, with personal belongings still inside. As if left behind, on a moments notice. This is beginning to creep me out. “Restrooms ➡️”, please tell me the water still works. I am SO thirsty! I began running towards the door. “Jesus!”, what is that smell! Oh my God. “Yack”, nope! Nope, I’m not doing that. I think I’d rather die. I quickly turned to head back outside when I heard a loud “BANG!”. From just behind me. I jumped! Nearly out of my shoes. It caught me so off guard. It was then…I first saw her. The blindfolded woman in red. Yet, I could only see her in the reflection of the mirror. There was actually nothing there. Where she, should have, appeared. This heat must be getting to me. I thought to myself. My head isn’t clear. Let’s ignore that for now. “Behind the Machine”, she whispered quietly in my ears. Both at the same time. As if she were inside me, not near. “Behind the Machine, Behind the Machine, Behind the Machine!” She repeated over and over. Getting louder each time she would ring. “Behind the Machine! Behind the Machine! Behind…the…machine.” And then, as suddenly as she appeared, all went quiet… And she was just… gone.
