The Theatre In The Night

V6

[Quiet piano. Distant strings.] [SURGEON] The corridors are empty, The final list is done, The theatre doors are closing, The working day has gone. The microscope is covered, The phayko machine is still, No voices through the doorway, No trolley on the sill. And here within the darkness, Where morning brings the light, There's something almost magical About the theatre in the night. [Strings enter] Tomorrow they'll be waiting, A dozen names or more, Each carrying their worries Through that ordinary door. One barely sees her daughter, One cannot read the page, One stopped driving months ago, One blames it all on age. They'll trust these hands tomorrow. They'll lie beneath this light. Such ordinary miracles Begin here every night. [REFRAIN] In the theatre in the night, Every instrument is sleeping, Every screen is dark and still, Every promise waits for keeping. For tomorrow comes a patient Who will place their trust in me, And perhaps when they leave this room They'll see what they could not see. [Instrumental rise] I've done this thousands of times now. I know each practiced part: The drape, the drops, the microscope, The rhythm learned by heart. But routine must never make me Forget the simple truth: Behind each eye, a person's life, A memory, a youth. A grandchild's face. A garden. A book beside the bed. The photograph of someone Whose voice is in their head. [Orchestra grows] We speak of lenses, pressure, Of capsules, scans and light, But patients bring us something more When they entrust their sight. [REFRAIN – soaring] In the theatre in the night, When the instruments are sleeping, There are promises tomorrow That these quiet walls are keeping. Not perfection. Not a miracle. Just the very best we know— To take a world that's fading And help it start to glow. [Music recedes] Tomorrow... [Looks back into theatre] Lights on. Microscope uncovered. “Next patient, please.” But now... Let everything be still. [Softly] In the theatre In the night.
