[Verse 1] Woke up with trouble sittin’ on my chest He’s grinnin' wide, claws diggin' in deep Won’t let me sleep [Pre-Chorus] I swore I'd quit him yesterday But he knows all the games we play [Chorus] There’s a monkey on my back Clingin' tight, won't cut slack Laughed when I tried to run Says, “We ain't done, we just begun” Chains and whispers, heart turned black That damn monkey’s on my back [Verse 2] He don’t eat, he don’t sleep I plead and I bargain, I push him away But he swings back strong by the end of the day [Pre-Chorus] I hide him well behind a smile But he’s been here a good long while [Chorus] There’s a monkey on my back Clingin' tight, won't cut slack Laughed when I tried to run Says, “We ain't done, we just begun” Chains and whispers, heart turned black That damn monkey’s on my back [Bridge] Maybe one day I’ll climb that tree And leave him behind, finally free But until then, it’s me and him Dancin’ circles on the ledge so thin [Final Chorus] There’s a monkey on my back Scratchin’ wounds I can't unpack Tells me lies that feel like truth Steals my fire, robs my youth I keep fallin' off the track With that monkey on my back
