Three Cartridges

V6

[INTRO — CINEMATIC SPAGHETTI WESTERN × OUTLAW COUNTRY VOODOO BLUES | ~94 BPM | booming dreadnought | five-string bass | lazy snare behind beat] [TELECASTER — dry 1–♭3–4→5 | confident, almost celebratory] Verse 1 Crown Junction raised its glasses When the northern riders came, Marshal Robert Barrow laughing, Eli Winter at his rein. Seven counties heard the message: North and center stood as one. Robert said, “Enough of courthouse walls. Let's go find ourselves some fun.” Hounds went barking through the timber, Men rode laughing through the rain— For one afternoon the Iron Chair Was just an empty thing again. Verse 2 — The Hunt [DRUMS become hoofbeat pulse | dreadnought low-string ostinato] Hounds found bear beyond the timber, Cornered hard against a stone. Robert stepped down with his rifle. Said, “This bastard's mine alone.” Shouldered up. Found the sight. Bear turned broadside through the brush. Robert smiled and squeezed the trigger— [ALL DROP] Click. [TELECASTER — short ♭5, NO resolution] Robert frowned and worked the lever. [LEVER-ACTION MECHANICAL CLACK] Brass went spinning through the leaves. Bear came roaring from the timber. Robert planted both his feet. Raised the rifle— Pulled again— Click. [TELECASTER — ♭5→5, STOP before 6] Verse 3 [HEARTBEAT KICK | vocal increasingly compressed but NEVER faster] Robert jacked another cartridge. Bear was thirty yards away. Third brass case hit the gravel. Someone shouted Robert's name. Shouldered. Sighted. Pulled— Click. [DEAD SILENCE] No fourth round. No time. [DRUMS — brutal impact] Hounds screamed. Rifles cracked. Men ran forward through the smoke— But by the time they killed the bear, Marshal Barrow... Didn't. Instrumental — Three Shells [NO RESONATOR] [DREADNOUGHT — low minor pulse] [TELECASTER repeats THREE incomplete supernatural-looking phrases: ♭5 | ♭5→5 | ♭5→5—each REFUSES 6] [FIVE-STRING BASS — low-B punctuation after each] Verse 4 Eli found him where he'd fallen. Closed his oldest friend's eyes. Then something shining near the brush Caught Winter by surprise. One brass cartridge. Then another. Third one underneath a stone. Three good primers, three good bullets. [PAUSE] He slipped them in his coat. [TELECASTER — quiet ♭5] Chorus Three empty shells in Winter's pocket, Three questions nobody asked, Three little pieces of an answer Someone buried in the past. Men can blame a charging grizzly. Men can call bad luck by name. But three dead rounds in one man's rifle... [TELECASTER — ♭5→5, refuse 6] That ain't chance. Verse 5 — The Powder [NIGHT | sparse dreadnought | no drums] Back in Crown Junction, after midnight, Eli locked his hotel door. Set three cartridges before him. Pulled the bullets one by one. First one— Nothing. Second— Nothing. Third— [PAUSE] Nothing. Not one grain of powder fell. Eli Winter sat there staring. Said, “Robert didn't die by chance.” Bridge — The Wrong Man [LOW drums return | ominous human danger] He told one man he'd always trusted, Showed the cartridges and said, “Somebody wanted Robert Barrow In that timber good as dead. Find who handled his ammunition. Find who benefits tonight.” The man said, “Eli, leave this with me.” [TELECASTER — low ♭5] Winter did. He shouldn't have. Verse 6 — The Iron Chair [BOOTHEELS | courthouse bell | dreadnought grows heavier] By sunrise Robert's widow Sat upon the Iron Chair. By breakfast Winter's room stood empty. By noon his wrists were bound. She called him traitor to the Seven. Said he'd plotted Robert's fall. Eli shouted, “Show the evidence!” She said, “I don't need any at all.” [DRY SNARE CRACK] No judge. No jury. No tomorrow. Just a scaffold in the square. Final Chorus [DARK FULL GROOVE | TELE increasingly bitter] Three empty shells in Winter's pocket, Three truths nobody would hear, One dead Marshal in the timber, One new ruler ruling fear. Words are wind in Crown Junction. Law is whatever wears the badge. And an Iron Chair don't care who's sitting— [PAUSE] Long as somebody hangs. [Execution] [ALL INSTRUMENTS DROP except low dreadnought] Eli stood above the people. Didn't beg and didn't kneel. Found his daughter in the crowd below. Held her eyes. Said, “Remember what is real.” [ROPE CREAK] [ONE DRY SNARE — NOT gunshot] [LONG SILENCE] Outro — The Daughter [TELECASTER — very quiet] She never screamed. Never cried there. Never gave them that relief. Just watched the Iron Chair's new widow Turn away beneath the wreath. Then she looked up at her father. Looked toward Winter County's road. And somewhere underneath her sorrow... Something colder took ahold. [TELECASTER — ♭5→5] She whispered: “I remember.” [For the FIRST TIME in song: RESONATOR — extremely distant ♭5→5→6] [WIND rises] [NO RESOLUTION]
