The House You Built

[INTRO — SPOKEN, LOW AND REFLECTIVE] You built it. You planted it. You worked for it. You thought your children would inherit it. But Moses already told Israel what would happen if we turned away from the covenant. You can build the house and never live in it. Plant the vineyard and never taste the fruit. Work with your hands and watch another people enjoy the reward. And generations later… Ezra looked back at a people who had forgotten why it happened. [VERSE 1] We had the land, we had the rain, Had the harvest, had the grain, Built the cities, raised the walls, Had the warning through it all. Put the seed into the ground, Watched the vineyard growing out, Built a house from stone and sweat, Thinking, “My children get this next.” But what happens when the blessing turns? When another man enjoys what your hands earned? When the field still grows, but you can’t eat? When the house still stands, but you lose the key? Your ox is taken right before your eyes, Your labor feeds somebody else’s life. Fruit of the ground, labor of your hands, Everything moving into somebody else’s hands. You worked it. They enjoyed it. You planted. They ate. You built something for tomorrow, But tomorrow changed its name. Moses told us what would happen if the covenant was broken. The stranger rises higher, While Israel keeps going lower. Until the head becomes the tail… And the tail looks up at everything it used to own. [CHORUS] We always trust in the Most High, Even when the road gets hard, we keep our heads high. Through the tears, through the years, through the long nights, We always trust in the Most High. We always trust in the Most High, When everything around us says we won’t rise. We remember the covenant, get our hearts right. We always trust in the Most High. [VERSE 2] Then Ezra speaks about the house, About the people cast without, What was given, what was lost, What rebellion finally cost. You were called, but wouldn’t hear. Prophets spoke year after year. Commandments sitting in your hand, Still rebellion filled the land. Then the house becomes desolate, What you wouldn’t honor, somebody else inherits it. Another people coming, now the picture starts to turn, They acknowledge their sins and the things that they must learn. Look toward the east, See another people come. Names of Abraham and Isaac, Jacob—where they’re from. Prophets standing in the record, Ancient testimony heard. What we treated like a burden, Another people values every word. And look at the contrast. One people grieving what was lost, Another walking through the door. One remembers what it cost, Another now enjoying more. The field didn’t disappear. The house didn’t disappear. The fruit didn’t disappear. You disappeared from the enjoyment of it. [BRIDGE — DRUMS DROP, BITTERSWEET] And the little ones rejoice… Listen. The little ones rejoice in gladness. Children laughing… Running through a place where your children used to play. Plenty around them. A house full of life. While you’re standing outside remembering when it was yours. Imagine that. Your head hanging down… Another family’s children smiling. Your labor still producing… But somebody else is enjoying the fruit. You planted the tree. But another child reaches up and takes the fruit from the branch. Was Moses lying? Or did we refuse to listen? [VERSE 3] Now the curse gets closer, It ain’t only crops and land. Now it reaches through the doorway, Starts dividing woman, man. You can find a righteous woman, Want to build a family strong, But judgment on a people can make everything go wrong. A woman sees a worthy man, Wants a household, wants a life, But instability and judgment cut like edges of a knife. Sons and daughters in your sight, But you can’t control their road. Eyes are looking after children, Hands too weak to bring them home. Now you understand the warning— This was deeper than some gold. Deeper than a piece of property or possessions getting sold. It’s the home. It’s the marriage. It’s the children. It’s the name. It’s inheritance disappearing generation after generation through the pain. You can’t enjoy the field. Can’t enjoy the vine. Can’t enjoy the house. Can’t enjoy what’s mine. Can’t enjoy the labor that consumed your whole life. Can’t enjoy your husband. Can’t enjoy your wife. Can’t enjoy your sons. Can’t enjoy your daughters. Now you finally understand why the covenant mattered. [VERSE 4 — FINAL REALIZATION] So don’t tell me judgment only looks like chains. Sometimes judgment looks like working and receiving nothing from the pain. Sometimes judgm
