[Verse 1] My niece drew seven paper horses And taped them to the kitchen wall She built a chute from cereal boxes Said the jar would pay for all We tipped our copper pennies out And counted them across the floor There wasn't enough for any fair So she made one behind the door [Chorus] Penny jar rodeo, round and round Paper horses in a little cardboard town Pick your favorite, start the race Watch that smile outrun the place No big buckle, no grandstand Just a copper coin in a little hand Penny jar rodeo, let it roll There's room for everybody in this show [Verse 2] We made the tickets out of napkins The winner got a lemon drop Her granddad made a tiny flag And held it high until it flopped I backed the horse with spotted ears She chose the one she'd colored blue We rolled the dice beside the sink And let the slowest finish too [Chorus] Penny jar rodeo, round and round Paper horses in a little cardboard town Pick your favorite, start the race Watch that smile outrun the place No big buckle, no grandstand Just a copper coin in a little hand Penny jar rodeo, let it roll There's room for everybody in this show [Instrumental - fiddle and lap steel, eight bars] [Bridge] On Monday we carried that same jar To the fairground by the mill We topped it up; she saved a penny For her next blue horse to win [Final Chorus] Penny jar rodeo, round and round Paper horses in a little cardboard town Pick your favorite, start the race Watch that smile outrun the place No big buckle, no grandstand Just a copper coin in a little hand Penny jar rodeo, let it roll We can make another when we're home [Outro] Her blue one guards the windowsill With that last penny at its feet.
