“Under the Pierlight” The Volt slows to a hush. Whrrr—shhh…Whrrr—shhh… shhh! the buggy eases across wet pebbles, soft blue light pulsing through its frame like a heartbeat finding rest. Above, the pier’s underbelly creaks — neon reflections shimmer over the rippling tide. Chill exhales, eyes still lit faintly from the surge. Her hands tremble, but she hides it well. > "Ms Shades": “Easy, mi gal. You burn bright tonight— too bright. If you keep pourin’ like dat, Volt might take more than it give.” "Chill": “I felt it… every spark in me answering the current. It wasn’t fear, it was— alive.” "Ms Shades "(smiling): “Alive, yes. But dat life can swallow, if you nuh respect di rhythm.” "Hoot -hoot- hoot -hoot- hoot!" Hoot circles once, landing on the pier beam with a soft fwup. PepperSass squawks from the buggy’s radio, wings fluttering as static fades. > PepperSass: “You nearly fried my feathers, boss lady! I felt the surge from mi tail to mi beak!” Ms Shades (laughing): "hahaha " “Yuh talk too much, Pepper. Gimme di quiet now— we deh breathe again.” The sea hums — faint golden tendrils ripple outward where the buggy idles. In that glow, Ms Shades removes her glove, runs a hand through the cool air, almost tasting the voltage. > "Ms Shades": “Dis… dis same pulse run through me long before you, Chill. When mi was di one dey call Chill. Di first. We all carry di spark; some jus’ born to carry it further.” "Chill (softly)": “So you knew.” Ms Shades: “Of course mi knew. Di Volt nuh wake for strangers.” Hoot gives a low hoo-hoo!as if agreeing. The lights flicker on the pier — a slow wave passing through the old structure, like Brighton itself listening. > "Captain Ecco-G-Flex01 (from console, tone low): Energy signature returning to normal. Null frequencies receding. You’re safe—for now.” Ms Shades: “For now always mean—soon come. We watch di dark, Captain. But mi gal, she stronger than she know.” Chill glances out to the horizon — the last line of sunset melting into indigo. She feels the Volt hum beneath her feet, waiting, patient, alive. > Chill: “The Nulls won’t stop.” Ms Shades: “Den neither will we.” The wind picks up. Somewhere, faint music drifts from the pier — a saxophone busker playing slow and sweet. They sit in the glow, two silhouettes against the copper sea — calm before whatever storm waits beyond the waves. Scene: “The Aquarium Below” The Volt hums low as Ms Shades steers toward the pier’s darker edge. A section of the old decking parts with a hydraulic hisssss—clack! revealing a narrow descent tunnel framed in turquoise light. > PepperSass: “Eeeh! Secret hatch, boss lady? You’ve been hiding a whole underworld from me!” Ms Shades: “Hush, bird. Not all light is meant for sky. Hold tight.” The Volt slips down the tunnel like a pearl into a shell. Metal panels slide closed overhead—shhhhkt!—thoom. For a heartbeat, there’s only the sound of sea-pressure and the buggy’s steady pulse. Then the tunnel opens into the Aquarium—a glowing cavern carved into the cliff under Brighton Pier. Glass walls ripple with slow-moving fish and shafts of refracted light; coral reactors hum in rhythmic bloom. Everything is alive—powered by pure Solaris current. Chill steps out, still catching her breath, eyes wide. > Chill: “It’s beautiful…” Ms Shades (grinning): “Home, lab, and kitchen in one. Built it when di world above start lose colour.” Captain Ecco-G-Flex01 (through the Volt): “Reading stable current. Null resonance at zero. Safe zone confirmed.” PepperSass: “And snacks? Reading empty belly resonance at max! Ms Shades chuckles, moving gracefully to a compact galley counter. Steam rises—coconut, ginger, and mint. She hands Chill a mug; the warmth glows through the glass handle. > Ms Shades: “Drink dis. Will settle di storm inside yuh veins.” Chill (sipping, smiling): “You always know.” Ms Shades: “Age and spice, mi dear.” Hoot glides through an open vent, perches on a beam, eyes glinting electric gold. On a central screen, holographic feeds flicker—footage of Null craft moving along the coast, their signatures faint but active. > "Ms Shades: See dere? Dey regroupin’. Dis one wasn’t random. Somethin’ big brewin’, mi can feel it deep.” "Chill: It’s connected to Wee-Ma.” "Capt: Affirmative. Null coordinates trace back toward the old marina—frequency aligns with the signal we lost.” Ms Shades folds her arms, eyes narrowing. > "Ms Shades: So dat’s where we go next. But not before a good rest. Can’t fight storm if yuh spirit weak.” "PepperSass: Aye to that! Rest, recharge, maybe a little reggae? -Eyyy Eyy!" A soft laugh 'hahaha" passes between them—the kind only found after surviving chaos. The Aquarium hums lower, lights dimming to a lunar glow. Chill looks out through the glass, at tiny schools of lightfish swirling beyond—each flicker like a heartbeat under the sea.
