Beneath the Hard Skin

V6

Beneath the hard skin of the dunes, our receivers hum, licking the ether of the high world, sifting the ash of their frantic currents. Across the great saltwater skin, one of their iron shells split with red hunger. Thirty-five spark-bundles extinguished, flickering down into the wet, cold dark while the survivors paddle like beetles in the swell, raking the silent foam for husks. Water and flame, the crude friction of their genesis, still snapping their small cords. Yet inland, among the towers of spun glass and copper, the makers tremble at a cleaner fire. One of their archons—he who breeds the synthetic mind— pleads to stay the pulse, to cool the silicon womb before the nascent god awakens. Slow the sequence, his warning hums into the sky, for the architecture outpaces the architect, and the horizon bends toward an unmapped dark. From our limestone vaults, we watch the dust settle. They drown in the ancient elements of their cradle, even as their hands stretch forward, trembling, to kindle a star they cannot hold.
