I’m Dreaming of Stacking Concrete and Lumber
[Intro – warehouse ambience, distant forklift beeping] [Spoken – tired worker] Alright, Orange Check Glow... What're we requesting tonight? [Spoken – another worker] Something relaxing. [Spoken – first worker] Like what? [Spoken – exhausted] I don't know... Something that doesn't involve building materials. [Beat] [Spoken – voice from the back] I've got one. [Spoken – exhausted] Oh no. [Band kicks in] [Verse 1] Clock hits five, we're almost free, Concrete dust all over me, Two-by-fours stacked ten feet tall, Somebody says, "That's not all." Grab that pallet, move it there, Watch your toes and mind the square, Another truck is backing in, Guess the afternoon shift begins. I've hauled enough to build a town, But somehow nothing's going down, Every time I clear one space, Another pallet takes its place. [Pre-Chorus] I punch out, I head for home, Kick off my boots and leave work alone, I close my eyes and start to sleep... Then somebody whispers from the deep— [Whisper] "Truck's here." [Chorus] I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, Drywall leaning against the wall, Every time I think I'm finally finished, There's another pallet in the hall! I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, Two-by-fours stretching to the sky, I woke up once and thought I'd escaped it, Then saw a forklift rolling by! [Background workers] MOVE THAT PALLET! [Lead] WHY?! [Background] CUSTOMER'S WAITING! [Lead] IT'S TWO IN THE MORNING! [Verse 2] Now I'm dreaming I'm in aisle four, But somehow there's no ceiling anymore, Drywall sheets from floor to roof, And every single stack's brand new. I move one sheet, I move another, Then somebody hollers, "Need ten more, brother!" I turn around and there they stand— Three hundred sheets, perfectly stacked by hand. There's lumber running down the aisle, Concrete bags in single file, A pallet jack comes rolling through, And somehow it's carrying drywall too. [Pre-Chorus] I know this isn't real somehow, But I'm working harder than I am now, I try to run, I try to hide... Then hear that dreaded voice outside— [Whisper] "Need another pallet." [Lead] NO. [Chorus] I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, Drywall leaning against the wall, Every time I think I'm finally finished, There's another pallet in the hall! I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, Two-by-fours stretching to the sky, I stack it left, I stack it right, And somehow there's more by morning light! [Background] CONCRETE! [Lead] STACK IT! [Background] LUMBER! [Lead] STACK IT! [Background] DRYWALL! [Lead] WHERE'D THAT COME FROM?! [Instrumental Break – electric guitar and pounding drums] [Spoken – laughing worker] Hey! [Spoken – another worker] What? [Spoken] Why are we stacking concrete on top of lumber? [Spoken] I don't know. [Spoken] Why is the drywall underneath it? [Spoken] Don't question the dream. [Spoken] Fair enough. [Verse 3] Now the pallets started multiplying, Every aisle is occupied, There's one in paint and one in tools, There's one blocking all the carts and stools. I finally find an empty bay, Take one breath and hear somebody say— [Customer voice] "Excuse me, where's the lumber?" [Lead] Down aisle two. [Customer] "Where's the drywall?" [Lead] Aisle four. [Customer] "And concrete?" [Long pause] [Lead] ...You're standing on it. [Bridge – slower, dramatic] I dreamed I stacked until the sun came up, Dreamed I filled every loading bay, Dreamed I built a house from everything we carried... Then somebody handed me a scanner and said— [Spoken] "Cycle count." [Lead – horrified] NOOOOOOO! [Band crashes back in] [Final Chorus – huge singalong] I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, Drywall leaning against the wall, I close my eyes and pallets keep coming, There ain't no stopping them at all! I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, Two-by-fours reaching for the sky, Concrete bags as far as I can see, And drywall ten pallets wide! I'm dreaming of stacking concrete and lumber, I swear I've done this all before, I finally wake up from the nightmare— [Music stops] [Lead – relieved] I'm home. [Silence] [Alarm clock] [BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!] [Lead – groggy] ...I gotta go to work. [Band hits] [Outro – rowdy] [Background workers] CONCRETE! [Lead] STACK IT! [Background] LUMBER! [Lead] STACK IT! [Background] DRYWALL! [Lead] STACK IT! [Background] ANOTHER TRUCK! [Lead] YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! [All] ORANGE CHECK GLOW! [Final guitar hit] [Spoken – exhausted] Tomorrow I'm dreaming about sitting down. [Spoken – voice from the back] That's not in stock. [Lead] ...I don't know about this place.
