This instrumental epic is based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West. It follows the king born from stone as he passes beyond the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, is bound by the lowly name Bimawen, leaps beyond humiliation to become the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and finally reaches the name of Victorious Fighting Buddha at the end of his long journey. Rather than aiming for perfect historical accuracy, the piece focuses on the moment an old legend begins to move again through music. Defiance toward heaven, laughter, the strength to break one’s chains, and a name that finally settles into light after the long battle. All of these motions are shaped into a bright, mythic surge.
