Leonardo da Vinci once wrote in his notebooks: “Make a lens to magnify the Moon.” Although no record remains that Leonardo ever constructed a telescope, Galileo Galilei later observed the Moon, the Sun, and even galaxies with a handmade telescope of ninefold magnification, publishing his Sidereus Nuncius (The Starry Messenger). Today, observation has evolved into instruments of extraordinary power, such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the Subaru Telescope, capable of detecting galaxies as far as 13.8 billion light years away. In a similar spirit, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek crafted a simple microscope of about 300× magnification and discovered microorganisms. Later, Robert Hooke published Micrographia, naming the smallest units of life “cells.” The remarkable molecular-level illustration of LUCA, published in PDB-01, was visualized by Dr. David S. Goodsell, based on research data from X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), atomic force microscopy, and electron microscopy. Its magnification ranges astonishingly from 100× to 40,000,000×. After a long evolutionary journey, humanity has advanced its technology to become an observer of nature at ultra-high resolution. https://pdb101.rcsb.org/sci-art/goodsell-gallery/last-universal-common-ancestor
