HAVE YOU MET MY RUMOR? You said my name like an old friend Before I told you what it was You had the ending in your pocket I hadn’t even found the plot You asked me why I’m so defensive Before I’d said a single word I watched you set a place for someone Who only lives in what you’ve heard Does she laugh a little louder? Does she always make a scene? Tell me, when you talk about her Do you ever picture me? Have you met my rumor? Did she get here before me? Did she tell you all her secrets In a voice that sounded like me? She has my name But not my eyes You know her story I know my life Have you met my rumor? You two seem to get along If you’ve already heard her version Will you listen to my song? You called me cold across the table I pushed your coffee from the edge You didn’t notice what my hands did Just the things I never said I’m sure she makes a better story She never stops to find a word She never calls to say she’s sorry For something no one overheard I can see why you believe her Every detail fits so well She was made to give you answers I’m still learning how to tell Have you met my rumor? Did she get here before me? Did she tell you all her secrets In a voice that sounded like me? She has my name But not my eyes You know her story I know my life Have you met my rumor? You two seem to get along If you’ve already heard her version Will you listen to my song? Tell me something she couldn’t know Ask me where I’d like to go Ask me why I hate this weather Let me take a while to answer You don’t have to like me We might disagree But leave a little room For someone you haven’t met yet— Me Have you met my rumor? She can wait outside tonight I might disappoint your expectations I might make you change your mind She has my name But not my eyes Pull up a chair I’ve got some time Have you met my rumor? Now you’ve heard her perfectly Could you put down what she told you Long enough to talk to me? Hi. I don’t think we’ve met.
