[NDC Throwback Thursday Genre: Grunge Theme: Famous Poems (public domain)] Adapted from Edgar Allan Poe’s public-domain poem “Eldorado” (1849). [“Eldorado” is about a knight who spends his life searching for a perfect place—an ideal that keeps slipping out of reach. He rides “in sunshine and in shadow,” meaning he keeps pursuing the dream through good times and bad, until age and exhaustion set in. At the end he meets a shadow—often read as Death or inner doubt—that tells him to go “over the mountains of the moon, down the valley of the shadow,” suggesting the road to that ideal lies beyond ordinary life and through darkness and risk, perhaps even toward death.
