Never Stayed Past Sunrise - Live
Alright y'all! This next one's got some attitude to it. It's about being scared of good things, but also... it's about finding someone who makes you brave enough to stop running. I wrote this after spending way too many mornings sneaking out like a damn cat burglar! But sometimes you meet someone who makes breakfast sound better than freedom. This one's called 'Never Stayed Past Sunrise'! Always kept my sneakers by the bedroom door Had my exit strategy planned before Five-thirty alarm would pull me from your arms Before the morning light could do me harm Never let them see me with my makeup gone Never let them catch me when the magic's done Been running from the sunrise all my life 'Cause daylight shows the truth behind the lies Never stayed past sunrise, never wanted to Always left them sleeping, that's what I would do But you make coffee singing, and your dog knows my name Now I'm fighting every instinct just to stay Never stayed past sunrise 'til I met you You don't try to hold me when I reach for clothes Don't make me feel guilty when I need to go Just smile and say "I've got fresh coffee brewing And pancakes on the griddle if you're in the mood" Your porch light keeps me company at dawn While you play guitar and try to not wake me up And something 'bout your gentle morning ways Makes me want to see another day Used to think that morning meant goodbye That staying meant I'd have to justify Why I'm worth the trouble, worth the mess But you just love me more, not less Never stayed past sunrise, but I'm learning to Trade my running shoes for something true Now you make me breakfast, and I know I'm safe Found a love that makes me want to stay Never stayed past sunrise Never stayed past sunrise 'Til you made me want to stay
