Versprochen." Vielleicht heilt man nicht zurück in sich. Vielleicht heilt man nur von jemandem weg. Und ich will nicht von dir wegheilen. Ich will nicht. Ich will nicht. Nach Mitternacht — da gehör ich mir. Kein Urteil. Kein Blick. ENGLISH The clock strikes twelve… When everyone’s sleeping, the city goes still, when no one’s left asking how I am, when no one knows what I think, want, and feel, when only the silence stays with me — then it comes out, so soft, so slight, all that I boxed away in daylight: I functioned fine. I laughed right on cue. But nothing stays sealed after midnight. After midnight — my witching hour. It hurts so much. And it’s mine alone. The darker the hour, the deeper the wound: Nothing brings you closer to me than this. (And nothing brings me closer to me.) You write: “I hope you’re doing well.” I type and delete. And type. And delete. Not that it’s a lie — you just shouldn’t see it, shouldn’t think I can’t stand on my own. I don’t want to be trouble. Don’t want to be work. Not the one you have to worry about. I wrap the pain in “wonderful” and add a heart at the end. For those who want too much wake up with empty hands. So I tell it only to the night — so quiet, so weak — the words I never say out loud: I’m not doing well. I miss you… Not well at all. And that’s the only thing that’s still true. Because if the pain ever stops, then you’re really gone. As long as it tears me, you’re still here — in every tear a trace of you, one final word. I don’t want to know what “healed” feels like, when healed means: without you. After midnight I dance myself into your arms, and you laugh, and you catch me soft. After midnight I show you my heart from the inside, and you marvel with me — at what it does to us. And we run, we run through our souls like through great, empty rooms where the wind blows through, and we love, and we love — no fear, no pain — and time forgets to move. (And time forgets to move.) Tonight my mind stays outside the door. By day it may mock me — not here. In here, no one talks my heart down small. Here we dance, here we love. Here it gets to be. I dance my shoes to pieces, the soles, the nights, like the twelve from the fairy tale — night after night. I dance until my feet are bleeding, and I thank the pain for keeping watch with me. Because the pain speaks to me, and it says: “I’m yours completely. And I won’t leave… Promise.” Maybe you don’t heal back into yourself. Maybe you only heal away from someone. And I don’t want to heal away from you. I don’t want to. I don’t want to. After midnight — I belong to me. No judgment. No eyes. Just me and the here (the here) And the here is full of you. My witching hour, my danced-out dance — for all it hurts: it makes me whole. I don’t want to know what “healed” feels like, when healed means: without — The clock strikes one. The wind dies down. The rooms grow small again. I put my shoes outside the door — till morning comes. Then I’ll be “wonderful” again. Then I’ll write you back: “I’m doing fine. And I think of you."
