The Rise And Fall Of The Great Highway
There once was a man named Jack, With a brother called Harry by his side. They ventured up the great highway, And met a woman with bright jade eyes. She led them to her cozy bungalow, Where they laughed and had their fun. But she took everything Jack owned, And left him out on the street, alone. Now Jack's a drifter in the subway, Singing, "I'm a jelly bean," all day, If only he knew what it meant It might drive him into a deep descent The sun climbed high above the great highway But Jack found no rest, no place to stay. He claimed a patch of dirt under the station Trying to prepare for the day's tribulations Then he saw a girl with her hair tied back In a brown dress, white shirt, and a baggy sweater slack She held a sign that simply read "Please help me," was all it said Now Jack's a wanderer on San Francisco’s streets Singing, "I'm a jelly bean," to everyone he meets If only he understood the words he repeats It might bring him to his knees in defeat One day someone will find him there, Just like he was found by the sea's cool air When all he had were dreams to sell And nothing left in this world to tell Now Jack's a shadow on San Francisco’s lane Singing, "I'm a jelly bean," in the pouring rain If only he knew what it truly meant He'd collapse into a catatonic lament There once was a man named Jack With a brother called Harry by his side They ventured up the great highway And met a woman with bright jade eyes...
