THE CARNIVAL AT THE EDGE OF TIME π ππ
[Intro β calliope, tape wobble, fuzzy guitar] [Announcer, distorted] "Welcome to the Carnival at the Edge of Time!" "Management accepts no responsibility for spontaneous enlightenment." [Male] Do you validate parking? [Announcer] Only in alternate dimensions. [Verse 1 β deep male, playful rhythm] I found a carnival behind a moonlit shopping mall, Where a giant floating eyeball sold admission to us all. There were rollercoasters travelling through the corners of the mind, And a Ferris wheel that turned so slowly it could leave the years behind. A magician pulled a Tuesday from an ancient velvet hat, Then a philosophical flamingo started arguing with a cat. The cat said, "Nothing matters!" and the bird replied, "How strange, If nothing really matters, why are you so scared of change?" I bought a little paper cup of stardust lemonade, And the waitress told me, "Happiness is never guaranteed. But you can give it room to visit, let it wander through your head, And stop demanding all the answers before climbing out of bed." [Pre-Chorus β female, dreamy] Round and round the planets go, Where they stop, nobody knows. What a beautiful peculiar ride, When you leave your heavy thoughts outside. [Chorus β female lead] Come away to the edge of time, Where the crooked stars and the planets rhyme. Let the world go wonderfully wrong, We can laugh until the fear is gone. Oh, don't be frightened of the strange, Everything is dancing, everything can change. Take my hand, let the moonlight shine, At the carnival on the edge of time. [Instrumental β guitar riff, funky bass, laughter] [Sample] "Attention: your sense of importance has been misplaced." [Second voice] "Wonderful. Can I get a refund?" [Reverse bell, guitar dive] [Verse 2 β male, mischievous] At the hall of mirrors stood a gentleman in green, Selling photographs of futures that nobody had seen. I looked into the first one; I was older, I was wise. In the second I was younger with confusion in my eyes. In the third I was a goldfish, in the fourth a chandelier, And the fifth was just a message saying, "Why exactly are you here?" I laughed until my stomach hurt, the mirror laughed as well, Then a clown with seven eyebrows rang an upside-down hotel bell. He said, "You humans spend a lifetime building castles out of doubt, Then wonder why you're lonely when you cannot find a way out." I said, "That's rather rude," and he replied, "It's rather true. But the universe is laughing, and it's saving you a view." [Pre-Chorus β female, strings] Round and round the planets go, What comes next, nobody knows. Maybe all we need tonight Is a little foolish joy beneath the light. [Chorus β female, male undertones] Come away to the edge of time, Where the crooked stars and the planets rhyme. Let the world go wonderfully wrong, We can laugh until the fear is gone. Oh, don't be frightened of the strange, Everything is dancing, everything can change. Take my hand, let the moonlight shine, At the carnival on the edge of time. [Breakdown β detuned carousel, airy vocals] [Announcer] "The existential crisis ride will reopen shortly." [Male, quietly] For years I thought that growing older Meant the wonder had to fade, That a serious kind of person Was the person I should make. [Female, intimate] But the child beneath the armour Still remembers how to play. You don't have to earn your laughter. You can simply laugh today. [Instrumental β organ, strings, bass returns] [Verse 3 β warm, humorous] At the centre of the carnival, a tiny wooden stand Held a sign: "THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE β PLEASE FORM AN ORDERLY BAND." I waited for an answer as the queue became a mile, And a turtle in a waistcoat greeted everybody with a smile. He gave me half a sandwich and a golden paper crown, Said, "There's no definitive answer, but you're welcome to sit down." I thought of all the years I'd spent demanding life explain Why the beautiful and terrible arrive upon the same old train. Then I ate my little sandwich as the fireworks filled the sky, And the turtle said, "Sometimes being here is reason enough to try." So I danced beneath the moonlight with a clown and seven bears; For a moment I stopped measuring And simply found myself right there. [Final Chorus β female harmonies, organic band] Come away to the edge of time, Where the crooked stars and the planets rhyme. Let the world go wonderfully wrong, We can laugh until the fear is gone. Oh, don't be frightened of the strange, Everything is dancing, everything can change. Take my hand, let the moonlight shine, At the carnival on the edge of time. [Outro β slow guitar, carousel winding down] [Male] So what's the actual meaning of existence? [Turtle] Well, did you enjoy your sandwich? [Male] Yeah, it was pretty good. [Turtle] There you go. [Female laughter, instrumental fade]
