Shrine of The Crows - Baptized In The Mire
I knelt where the pews had rotted through, Frogs sang hymns the choir once knew. The cross was gone, but the air still prayed, And the crows kept time in the heat and shade. There’s faith in mud, there’s grace in rot, The kind the preachers always forgot. And I found peace where the bones decay, In the hum of the swamp at the end of the day. Oh, the light shone through the stained glass, But I felt no burdens lifted from me. No gods above or below can judge what I’ve become, I was immersed where the Damned run free, In the darkness of that muddy water… I was baptized in the mire. I drank that river, thick and low, Tasted rust, and I let it show. The willows wept, but they didn’t grieve, They just whispered, “Child, don’t ever leave.” The sky cracked open, let the thunder in, And I saw my soul shed its skin. The leeches bled it out, the fever gone, And the swamp sang soft, “You belong.” Oh, the light shone through the stained glass, But I felt no burdens lifted from me. No gods above or below can judge what I’ve become, I was immersed where the Damned run free, In the darkness of that muddy water… I was baptized in the mire. They say the Lord once walked these reeds, But the footprints filled with crawfish and weeds. I seen His shadow crawl on the wall, Stretchin’ long where no light falls. The hymn books bled their ink to the tide, Names of the faithful all washed inside. And something hummed from beneath the pews, A thousand tongues in the black bayou. Oh, the light shone through the stained glass, But I felt no burdens lifted from me. No gods above or below can judge what I’ve become, I was immersed where the Damned run free, In the darkness of that muddy water…. I was baptized in the mire. Now my faith’s grown roots and thorns, I’ve been reborn in a world deformed. The crows still sing, the moon still burns, And every sinner gets their turn. The roots reached up, the sky burned down, And the mud pulled tight like a prophet’s crown. Now I hum that tune, low and dire… The gospel of the drowned and tired. Oh, the light shone through the stained glass, But I felt no burdens lifted from me. No gods above or below can judge what I’ve become, I was immersed where the Damned run free, In the darkness of that muddy water… I was baptized in the mire. I was baptized in the mire… I was immersed where the Damned run free, In the darkness of that muddy water… I was baptized in the mire.
