“Siúil a Rúin” is a traditional Irish folk song, sung from the point of view of a woman who mourns her beloved as he leaves for war, while still promising him her love and devotion. Its exact origins remain uncertain, but the song is often associated with the history of the Irish “Wild Geese” and the old Jacobite exile tradition. The song is especially memorable for its macaronic form: English verses joined with an Irish Gaelic refrain, giving it both intimacy and ancient sorrow. The “Wild Geese” is a poetic and historical name for Irish exiles and soldiers who left Ireland after the defeat of the Jacobite cause and went on to serve in the armies of continental Europe, especially in France, Spain, and Austria. A beautiful lyrical Russian translation was made by Pavel Pankov. (Psychopath's Lair) The Russian version appeared almost instantly, as if the song had been waiting for these words, and it fit naturally onto the basic MIDI melody of this wonderful traditional Irish folk song. ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ [Intro] [fingerstyle acoustic guitar, cello enters with a mournful melody] [Verse 1] [female vocals enter] Хочу я присесть на далёком холме И плакать так сильно с рекой наравне Что мельницы будут скрипеть в тишине Я верю: однажды ко мне ты вернёшься [Chorus] [piano and orchestral strings enter, kick drum pulse] Продам я любимое веретено Продам я все нитки, продам я сукно Чтоб меч раздобыть для тебя. [Chorus] [climax with heavy percussion and soaring strings] Желаю, желаю, желаю опять Я сердце своё из могилы достать Хоть знаю, что буду отныне страдать Я верю: однажды ко мне ты вернёшься [EN] I long to sit down on a distant hill, And cry like a river that never lies still, Till the old mills creak in the silence so still. I believe — one day you will come back to me. I’ll sell my dear spindle, my thread and my wool, I’ll sell every cloth from my basket full, To buy you a sword. It is settled and true. I believe — one day you will come back to me. Go on, go on, my dearest one, Through cold, through wind, through burning sun. Go on, and let my heart be won. I believe — one day you will come back to me. I’ll dye all my skirts in the color of dawn, I’ll wander the roads with dry bread to live on. One day my own parents may curse me — be gone! But still, with all my heart, you will come back to me. I wish, I wish, I wish once more To lift my heart from the grave’s dark floor. Though I know I’ll suffer forevermore, I believe — one day you will come back to me. Go on, go on, my dearest one, Through cold, through wind, through burning sun. Go on, and let my heart be won. I believe — one day you will come back to me.
