Five dolls on the dresser, One without a name. Emy lines them in a row, Says goodnight the same. There’s a noise beneath the door, But no one calls her back. She hides the sound inside her chest, And whispers to the cracks. Ahh... oooh… Stay still, stay small, The room forgets to breathe at all. Emy’s dolls still wait for her, Tiny hands in quiet air. Every face remembers words That never reached the open air. Years fold in cardboard seams, Dust and daylight trade their tasks. Someone opens up the box, The past doesn’t exist ’til they ask. Hahh... uhh-ahh… “I came back,” she says, Her voice unravels slow. What the dolls once tried to hold, Now trembles, then lets go. No one hears it, that’s okay. The morning finds another way. Uhh… ahh… The dolls just stare, And something silent learns to stay.
