An American Poem

It seems like whenever I step out on city streets I'm struck again by how callous they can be The destitute Livin' hard All while just trying to get enough to eat "America....man, what a dream....or at least for some....." As I pass by the hot spots scattered around I see posters and stickers of bands that are in town But what cuts me right down to my very soul Is they stapled their flyers over missing posters on the pole "I think...in some ways....many among us have let the success of others bring them down.... our lives may not be perfect, but they are all meaningful." The trash I see everywhere, a reflection of our minds Decadent and destructive, no gain found in being kind The fires burn in alleyways, lighting up the dangerous night With fearful shadows as people move, hidden out of sight "There's a cancer in this country....and I don't know what the cure is anymore....but I know this....that what I can do I will....and what I can't....I won't waste time worrying about." Remember when they said we were a shining city on a hill? How's that make any sense when we have homeless still? We're sitting on land stolen, by murderers we revere While stuffing ourselves with pride to choke down our rising fear "People...I don't know anymore...I just don't know....." [Outro]
