Magic and Sword: https://suno.com/playlist/6ca95f12-3112-42db-ab0b-5a4a5249ac62 The donkey ate the orders [Verse 1] At a muddy border station where the rain came through the wall, four men guarded sacks of barley, three old spears and nothing more. Then one morning at the gateway stood a donkey, grey and small. No one knew from where he’d wandered. No one claimed the beast at all. They drove him down the roadway. He returned before the noon. Someone gave the fool an apple. That was how the siege began. [Chorus] The donkey ate the orders, the oats and half the store, he marched into the garrison like he had been there before. The captain cried, “Who let him in?” Four soldiers stared away. EE-AAAH! There was nothing left to say. [Verse 2] By the third night he had conquered every corner of the yard. He inspected every bucket, every saddle, every cart. Then he breached the ration chamber with a skill no scout could match, ate a generous sack of oats and found the paperwork attached. Weekly reports and duty records, signed and sealed and neatly filed. The donkey read them thoroughly. Then ate them with a smile. [Chorus] The donkey ate the orders, the oats and half the store, he marched into the garrison like he had been there before. The captain cried, “Who let him in?” Four soldiers stared away. EE-AAAH! There was nothing left to say. [Verse 3] Four brave soldiers faced their captain at the breaking of the day. One looked solemn, one looked guilty, one looked very far away. Jack stood quietly among them, trying hard to look surprised, knowing he had fed the creature one more apple late last night. “WHO ALLOWED THAT BEAST INSIDE?” The captain thundered through the hall. Then the donkey raised his head and gave the finest answer of them all. EE-AAAH! [spoken] One man laughed. Then two. Then Jack. [spoken] The captain did not laugh. [Single dry drum hit] [Bridge] Three days cleaning out the latrines. Military law prevailed. [SFX: bucket clatter, exaggerated sigh] But the donkey stayed another week and every effort failed. He hauled water. He pulled wagons. He carried sacks from door to door. [spoken] Officially he did not exist. Unofficially... he ran the store. [Final Chorus] The donkey ate the orders, the oats and half the store, he served without a uniform and always wanted more. The captain swore, “That beast must go!” for fourteen days or so. Then bought him a blanket when the nights grew cold. [Music softens briefly] And everybody knew. [Outro] So raise no statue to the soldiers. Write no medals for the brave. Remember instead the border donkey no commander ever tamed. And somewhere still, beneath the stars, if old campaigners tell it right, he’s eating military secrets and sleeping warm at night. EE-AAAH! EE-AAAH!
