[Verse 1] You left your blue scarf on the chair A bus ticket folded in its seam I found it when I swept the kitchen And stood there longer than I mean [Pre-Chorus] The kettle clicks, the window shakes Your name still catches in my throat I take the long way past the station With that old ticket in my coat [Chorus] If you come back, knock twice I’ll leave the hallway lamp on low There’s room beside the chipped green cup And time enough to take it slow If you come back, knock twice No need to tell me where you’ve been Just set your blue scarf by the door And let the morning start again [Verse 2] The corner shop changed hands in spring The baker still remembers you He asks if you’ve been sleeping better I say, “I hope you’re making do” [Pre-Chorus] The kettle clicks, the window shakes Your name still catches in my throat I take the long way past the station With that old ticket in my coat [Chorus] If you come back, knock twice I’ll leave the hallway lamp on low There’s room beside the chipped green cup And time enough to take it slow If you come back, knock twice No need to tell me where you’ve been Just set your blue scarf by the door And let the morning start again [Bridge] I won’t ask for the whole story Or ask you to undo the years Just bring the laugh you used to lose When you were trying not to cry [Final Chorus] If you come back, knock twice I’ll leave the hallway lamp on low There’s room beside the chipped green cup And time enough to take it slow If you come back, knock twice No need to tell me where you’ve been Just set your blue scarf by the door And let the morning start again [Outro] The hallway lamp is on The hallway lamp is on
