Mom Said Be Careful

Verse 1 A little boy is walking home, his backpack hanging low. The streets are getting quieter, the evening starts to glow. He hears another set of steps behind him in the rain. He looks back once. Then looks again. Someone is still there. Verse 2 He starts to walk a little faster, trying not to show his fear. The footsteps get a little faster. They sound a little nearer. His little hands begin to shake. His breathing isn't right. He wishes he was home already. He wishes for his mother's light. Pre-Chorus And suddenly he remembers the words she always said: "Be careful when you're out alone. Don't trust the world ahead." Chorus So he runs. He runs as fast as he can. His little shoes hit the pavement. His tears fall down again. He doesn't turn around. He doesn't want to see. He just keeps running faster, praying someone will hear his plea. "Mom, I should've listened. Mom, I should've stayed. You told me to be careful. I'm scared I've lost my way." Verse 3 He sees a house with yellow lights and runs toward the door. His fingers barely reach the bell. He presses it once more. He knocks with both his little hands. He cries, "Please, let me in!" But no one opens. No footsteps. No voice. Nothing. Bridge He looks behind him. The street is almost empty. The footsteps are still coming. His heart is beating so loudly that he can barely think. He remembers all the stories he heard about children who disappeared. And suddenly the world doesn't feel like home anymore. Chorus So he runs. Though his legs are hurting now. He keeps calling for his mother, but he doesn't know how. "Mom, where are you? I need you here tonight." His voice becomes a whisper beneath the streetlight. He knocks on one more door. Nothing. He knocks again. Nothing. Verse 4 He slides down beside the doorway, his backpack on the ground. He covers up his face so nobody hears the sound. He's trying hard to be brave, just like his mother taught him. But he's only just a little boy, and the night feels much too big. Chorus *"Mom, you said be careful. You said I'd be okay. You said that if I needed help, I'd find somebody someday."* But the street stays cold and silent. The windows stay alight. And somewhere in the darkness, he wishes he could turn back time. He wishes he had listened. He wishes he was home. He wishes his mother's arms were somewhere close. Outro A little boy sits quietly beneath a fading light. His mother's final warning echoes through his mind. "Be careful, little one. The world can be unkind." He closes his eyes and whispers softly— "Mom... I tried."
