TIME 012 – Eyes Beneath the Moon | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller watched the moonlight spill across the sleeping land, While silver shadows gathered where the distant arches stand. Then something pale moved softly where the deeper darkness lay, A shape that seemed to watch him from the border of the day. (Verse 2) He glimpsed a face beneath the trees, then saw it slip from sight, A colourless and furtive thing that belonged wholly to the night. The Eloi drew together as the evening shadows spread, And fear replaced their laughter when the final sunlight fled. (Chorus) There were eyes beneath the moon where the quiet gardens slept, And something through the darkness moved while frightened Eloi wept. The future wore another face when daylight lost its reign, And paradise grew colder beneath the moonlit plain. (Verse 3) By day the world seemed gentle, soft with blossom, fruit and ease, But night revealed a secret moving underneath the trees. The Eloi feared the darkness with a terror deep and old, As though the night remembered truths the daylight never told. (Verse 4) He searched among the shadows for the creatures he had seen, And wondered what could haunt a world so tranquil and serene. The pale forms kept their distance, but their presence made it clear, That something else inhabited the future beside fear. (Chorus) There were eyes beneath the moon where the quiet gardens slept, And something through the darkness moved while frightened Eloi wept. The future wore another face when daylight lost its reign, And paradise grew colder beneath the moonlit plain. (Bridge) The Traveller's first theory cracked beneath the midnight sky, For peaceful worlds should harbour nothing Eloi feared nearby. The darkness held an answer that the sunlight could not show, And somewhere under moonlight moved a race he did not know. (Outro) The pale eyes vanished slowly as the eastern heavens grew bright, And morning drove the hidden shapes away before the light. But once he knew the darkness held another living strain, The garden world of daylight could not seem the same again.
