Mama says... People like surprises. I found your pretty house today. The blue one with the tree. You left your window open wide... I think... You were expecting me. Your hallway has a squeaky board. The third one from the stairs. I skipped it after three more tries. You smiled... In all your picture frames. When I waved... You dropped your groceries. Did I wave too hard? Did I smile too long? Everybody looks afraid... Am I singing wrong? Why do people run... Before I say hello? Was I supposed……….. To wait outside? Your blanket slipped onto the floor. You looked so cold to me. I tucked you in beside your bear... Just like Mama did for me. Friends don't have to knock. Mama said they never do. I stayed so you'd have someone... When the morning came. You opened up your eyes... And started crying. Did I stay too long? Did I laugh too loud? Everybody closes doors... When they see me now. Why do people cry... When I finally wave? How can I say sorry... If nobody will stay? I know your birthday. I know your bedtime. I know the song you hum... When nobody's around. I know... Because I listen. That's how friends learn. Isn't it? Don't cry! I'll knock first! Don't hide! I'll wait outside! I'll wave smaller! I'll ask this time! Please don't... Stop... Being... My friend... I'll be quieter! I'll count to ten! I'll bring you flowers! I'll smile again! Don't send me away... I can learn... Just tell me... The rules... Tomorrow I'll knock first. Then count to ten. I'll stand where you can see me... Till you smile again. I'll leave your favorite flowers. I'll wave much smaller too. Maybe... Tomorrow... You'll wave back too. I think... I'll try again tomorrow.
