As the chant rises, AVIVA slings the harp across her back, turns toward the open, sun-bleached upstage, lifts her chin, and takes the first step into the wilderness. A fierce, determined remnant of the young step out with her, leaving the elders behind in the morning light. SCENE EIGHT — THE FINALE Epic, cinematic golden-orange light. A scrim opens onto the vast, punishing, breathtaking desert. The choreography is heavy and rhythmic — the weeks and months of a grueling trek; the travelers carry bundles of wood, stone tools, water jars, the sacred vessels. AVIVA leads from the front, using the harp like a staff. The music shifts, mile by mile, from the minor-key sorrow of the exile into a thundering major-key rhythm of return. The dust clears. The light breaks into a raw, brilliant dawn. The travelers crest the final ridge and freeze, looking down — and there, below them, are the ruins of Jerusalem: blackened stones, fallen pillars, wild weeds pushing up through the cracks of what was once Solomon's temple. It is devastatingly small, and devastatingly beautiful. YOUNG EXILE 1. (quietly, dropping his pack) ...It's so small. AVIVA. (walking down to the very edge of the stage, looking at the ruins with overwhelming recognition — the city of every lullaby, real at last) It's perfect. She unslings the harp. She steps down onto the scorched stone of the ancient temple courtyard, kneels, and sets the base of the harp against the bare rock — the harp that hung silent in Babylon for seventy years. Beside it she sets the rescued golden cup. The past and the future, side by side on the temple floor.
