Close Enough Crowd

V5.5

--- Another song for the "Jesus and the Dinosaurs" album. My good friend MM did the lyrics for this one. Concept is finding your "crowd" even if you aren't really part of their lifestyle. Inspired by personal experience hanging out with the smoking group even though you're a non smoker. They are accepting though as even if you don't partake, you're still "close enough" to belong. Sometimes you just need to find common ground to find where you belong. I had some fun adding in the Sitar and Bongos. Was really curious to see how the Persona would handle that, but it worked out quite well. The different / unusual instruments give it a fun extra unique kind of feel. As a bonus, I swear I can hear a bit of an tribute to "Fly Like an Eagle" in there too . . . lol. ~David --- [Musical Introduction] [Music Build Up] [Verse 1] Back row philosophers with hoodies pulled tight Laughing at nothing, but it feels just right I don’t light up, I just sit in the smoke Secondhand belonging, yeah, I’m in on the joke Notebook margins filled with runaway lines While they pass around dreams rolled up in disguise They say “take a hit,” I say “nah, I’m good” But they still let me stay like I kinda should [Pre-Chorus] I don’t match the rhythm, but I know the song Feels like I’m somewhere that I half-belong [Chorus] I found my place in the almost scene In between who I am and who I could be They’re drifting off, I’m wide awake But they don’t mind the space I take I’m not lost, just passing through In a cloud that I can see right through If I don’t fit, I still feel proud To be in the close enough crowd [Verse 2] They talk about colors I can’t really see But I paint whole worlds in a melody They slow it down, I speed it up Different kinds of “out of luck” One kid says, “man, you think too much” Yeah, maybe that’s why I don’t need the crutch But I get what he means when he stares at the sky We’re chasing the same thing, just getting there wide [Musical Interlude] [Music Solo] [Pre-Chorus] They blur the edges, I draw the lines Different ways to escape our minds [Chorus] I found my place in the almost scene In between who I am and who I could be They’re drifting off, I’m wide awake But they don’t mind the space I take I’m not lost, just passing through In a cloud that I can see right through If I don’t fit, I still feel proud To be in the close enough crowd [Bridge - spoken/rap hybrid] I tried on labels like thrift store jeans Too tight here, too loose in the seams They say “just pick one,” but I kinda refuse I’m a mixed-up kid with selective views Not high, not straight-edge, not in-between Just somewhere floating where I can breathe If belonging’s a test, I’m guessing I passed ‘Cause nobody here’s asking me to be that [Musical Interlude] [Music Solo] [Final Chorus - slightly lifted energy] Yeah I found my place in the almost scene Not a perfect fit, but it fits me They’re drifting off, I’m wide awake Still they like the noise I make I’m not lost, just passing through But I think I’m starting to choose what’s true If I don’t fit, I still feel proud To be in the close enough crowd [Musical Ending] [Fade Out] [End]
