Some said the roots were fed with blood before their oldest names. The mouths that told it came and went. My leaves remained the same. [Verse 2] Two came beneath me after rain. They carried one between. No name was spoken over him. They hardly spoke at all. The iron struck a living root. They dug until it broke. They laid him in the loosened earth and stamped the surface flat. [Verse 3] At first he gave me only weight, a colder place below. Then water moved through opened soil and brought a steady pull. It leaned toward younger voices first, again, again, again. Each time it moved a little near, something in them withdrew. [Verse 4] The strongest things he carried down were not the things he said: a laugh cut short, a chair moved back, a step that turned instead. The younger voices came and went. Their fear remained with him. [Verse 5] Rain entered where the iron cut. Frost tightened up the ground. Small roots found the loosened seam and passed him going down. The pull grew weaker, rain by rain. The ground closed where they dug. What had arrived beneath my leaves grew quieter in the soil. [Final Verse] The cut root hardens where it broke. The loosened earth sinks flat. Rain soaks in, then frost, then rain. Grass covers where they stood. My leaves keep autumn all year long, red, copper, ochre, brown. Wind passes through the branches. The roots go farther down.
