[Verse 1] You hear a friend in trouble Your boots stay by the door You know the whole damn story But you don't want it anymore When the night gets heavy You look away from the mess No fire in your pocket Just a shrug in your chest [Pre-Chorus] 'Cause love is the thing That makes you stand Love is the thing That reaches for a hand [Chorus] Hard to take their side Hard to take their side When your heart's gone dry Hard to take their side (when your heart's gone dry) (when your heart's gone dry) [Verse 2] When you don't love God The shadows get loud Every little thunder Feels like coming for you now You read the old words But they hit like rain If you don't know mercy Fear will learn your name [Pre-Chorus] 'Cause love is the thing That keeps you still Love is the thing That bends your will [Chorus] Hard to take their side Hard to take their side When your heart's gone dry Hard to take their side (when your heart's gone dry) (when your heart's gone dry) [Bridge] And if you don't love others You can't stand firm You can't see the reason You can't hold your ground No face in the fire No weight in the fight Nothing worth defending When love don't light it up [Chorus] Hard to take their side Hard to take their side When your heart's gone dry Hard to take their side Hard to take their side Hard to take their side When your heart's gone dry Hard to take their side (when your heart's gone dry) (when your heart's gone dry)
