Let’s walk home together along Keyaki Street. I love zelkova trees. Out of all trees, they somehow feel the most like “a tree” itself — as if they embody the very idea of tree-ness. Through winter, they stand there with only their bare structure, like abstract drawings made of branches. And around this season, on “Keyaki Streets” all across Japan, they begin opening their pale young leaves. Their flowers are so small you could almost miss them, but they’re there, swaying properly in the May wind. Every year they remind me, just a little, “Oh right… this is a living thing.” And zelkovas are sturdy. Even when treated a bit carelessly, they don’t seem too discouraged. I imagine countless city-planning meetings somewhere, where someone casually said, “Well… zelkova trees are probably the safest choice for street trees,” and the name too was decided just as casually: “Alright then — Keyaki Street.” As if it were merely a blank space on some document, approved in exchange for stacks of official seals. And yet, when spring comes, they put out fresh green leaves all the same. Completely indifferent to human circumstances, they remain one of the trees of the seasonal calendar. Especially in May — the season of delicate buds and tiny graceful flowers. If I were to give this season a name, I’d call it “Keyaki-zuki” — the month of zelkova, the season of young leaves and quiet little blossoms. If I were to name it at all, it would be Keyaki-zuki.
