💙11 - Älä anna minun jäädä [Runes of Wyrd - vol 3]🤍
For almost a year, I’ve been writing Runes of Wyrd. Today, I’m proud to bring its universe to life in a new way. Pulling too hard, I nearly drove my elbow into his teeth; he avoided it easily, then offered me his arm with a smile that only irritated me further. “Lean on me, Mikell. No one will tell the story of Skar needing help to climb out of a hole.” “Bruno would.” “Bruno is looking elsewhere.” I took his arm. The ice gave way with a sharp crack, and we resumed walking, me with a slight limp, him with the discretion of a man who understood that it was better not to comment. Niflheim had closed around us. We could still make out our companions’ backs, but beyond them, the trees were little more than dark strokes in the mist. Almost no snow was falling; it skimmed the ground, lifted by a wind that slipped beneath our clothes and stayed there. There was an ache behind my covered eye. Lately, I had been checking my eyepatch too often. “You could give it a little air,” Johannes said. “Give what air?” His gaze lingered on my temple. “Ah. No. It has travelled quite enough today.” “You speak of that eye as though it were a companion you had grown tired of.” “A companion can at least carry the bags.” Johannes smiled, but I sensed he was waiting for more. I tugged the cloth back into place. “At the forge, it was useful. Here, I would rather not see so far.” “Do you think it would show you something?” “I have no idea. That is precisely the problem.” We passed a fallen tree whose branches had frozen into an almost human posture. I took care not to look at it twice. “And on the bridge?” he asked. “What about the bridge?” “Do you intend to keep it covered?” I blew into my hands before answering. “Ash told us about memories that can take shape. Imagine that this eye recognises something there that I have forgotten. I would not even know which of the two to trust.” Johannes slowed to stay beside me. “Does that happen already?” “Knowing things without knowing where they come from? Yes. Wondering how much still belongs to my own life… less often, before this journey.” I searched for Skörta in the mist. She was walking a little ahead of Torstein, Blíðki concealed beneath the folds of her cloak. She must have felt my gaze, because she briefly turned her head. I raised a hand to show her that everything was all right. Johannes followed the gesture. “Does she know you worry this much?” “She has enough to deal with herself.” “And you?” “I still have the strength to complain. That is encouraging.” He gave me a few steps’ respite. Then: “What are you hoping to find there?” The question startled me more than it should have. Ever since Ash had told us what awaited us, I had mostly been trying to avoid thinking about it. “I am not certain I am hoping for anything.” “You have lost something, though.” “Yes, but so far, I have managed to live without it.” Johannes lowered his eyes to the ground, watching the smooth patches between the stones. I thought he would leave it there. “You do not know what it is,” he continued. “How can you be certain?” I wanted to answer, then abandoned the phrase that came to mind. It would have sounded true; it would not have been. “Because I am still walking, I suppose.” The wind lifted a handful of snow between us. I closed my good eye and waited for the sting to pass. “There was a house,” I said at last. “When I was young. Nothing remarkable. The roof leaked in spring, and a bench had to be moved whenever it rained.” Johannes did not turn his head. I was grateful to him for that. “I remember the bench very well. The sound of the drops. The smoke that lingered in the room when the wind blew from the wrong direction. But sometimes, when I think about it, I feel as though I am waiting for someone to come in.” “Who?” “If I knew, we would be having a much less painful conversation.”
