[Intro – spoken, soft waves, distant gulls, acoustic guitar] Six seventeen in the morning. Coffee. Bare feet. No plans. Then I saw the boat. Thomas Vale had sailed out last night. Funny thing about the sea... sometimes it returns everything. Almost. [Verse 1] Morning spilled across the bay, gold upon the blue, I knew that little fishing boat, I knew its owner too. It drifted like it had all day, with nowhere left to be, then kissed the sand below my house as gentle as could be. His jacket on the captain's chair, the key still in its place, two glasses waiting by the wine, but Thomas left no trace. [Pre-Chorus] No broken rail, no sign of fear, no storm had crossed the coast. Just one small boat returning home without the one it knows. [Chorus] The boat came back empty, with the sunrise on its bow, carrying every little secret it wasn't telling now. The sea was calm and innocent, the morning warm and bright, but something sailed away with him somewhere in the night. The boat came back empty... Thomas Vale did not. [Instrumental – acoustic guitar, cello, subtle Mediterranean strings] [Verse 2] Mercer came at seven sharp, already looking tired. He said, “Vivienne, please go home.” I smiled. He wasn't inspired. “No blood, no fight, perhaps he fell.” A reasonable reply. But reasonable has never stopped a carefully told lie. Then something white beside my shoe caught sunlight from the east. A little wooden chessman lying underneath the seat. [Pre-Chorus] Not washed aboard, not dropped by chance, too clean to come from sea. A king without his battlefield... And someone wanted me to see. [Chorus] The boat came back empty, with the sunrise on its bow, carrying every little secret it wasn't telling now. Two glasses and a bottle, one jacket folded tight. Someone else was with him when Thomas sailed last night. The boat came back empty... but not alone. [Bridge – spoken, sparse piano & waves] Mercer looked at the chess piece. Then at me. “Vivienne... don't.” I put it back exactly where I'd found it. “Daniel, I haven't done anything.” He sighed. He knows me far too well. [Instrumental Break – cello, mandolin, acoustic drums slowly building] [Final Chorus] The boat came back empty, while the village came alive, doors were opening, bells were ringing, fishermen arrived. And somewhere behind those windows someone already knew why Thomas Vale went sailing... and who went with him too. The sea returned his little boat, his jacket, keys and wine. But kept one question underneath that Mediterranean sky... Where is Thomas Vale? [Outro – spoken, acoustic guitar fading into waves] I picked up my coffee. Cold. Wonderful. So much for a quiet morning.
