No Audience Left

[Intro ] “Come on, you can't tell me you've got it all figured out.” “Who does?” “Alright, alright… one more round.” [Verse 1 ] You see happy people, laughter echoing Beneath the evening sun on a terrace Sitting with the crew, laughing, having a good time Being myself, the clown who's always good for a laugh Funny how, when I was young, I was scared of getting older When that's really when you start to find yourself “Yeah, and somehow we're still pretending we've got it all figured out” “We can barely pay a bill without having a panic attack” Everybody's laughing, I lean back in my chair Order another round and say, “Life works itself out” Someone talks about their dreams, someone talks about a trip I throw in another joke before anyone can ask too much [Pre-Chorus ] “But what about you?” I raise an eyebrow, “Me? What about me?” “You always seem like you've got it together.” I laugh, “Of course I do.” [Chorus ] I'm exactly who they think I am Always smiling, always ready with a laugh If somebody asks me how I'm doing I give them the easiest answer I have “I'm fine, I'm fine” Watch me laugh, watch me live “I'm fine, I'm fine” Nobody needs to know the rest [Verse 2 ] But the night comes to an end, chairs scrape across the pavement “We'll talk tomorrow!” — I wave as they leave City lights shimmer in the windows I walk home alone with my hands inside my pockets At first, I can still hear their voices Then all I hear is the sound of my own footsteps A laugh somewhere in the distance A bus goes by, then everything goes quiet I think about everything we talked about About life, about the future, about who we thought we'd become And somewhere between the streetlights and my front door My thoughts start running faster than I can keep up My keys rattle in my hand The hallway light flickers on I find the right key without even thinking CLICK. The door closes. And suddenly, there's no audience left. [Verse 3 ] My shoes fall off in the hallway My jacket hits the floor wherever it lands I stand there for a moment, just breathing Like my body forgot how to stop pretending The silence screams louder than the music did The thoughts come rushing in, one after another “Why did you say that?” “Why did you laugh like that?” “Do you really think anyone believes you?” I sink down onto the floor Cover my face with both hands That clown from the terrace Has nowhere to perform in here [Chorus ] Who am I when nobody's watching? Who am I when nobody asks? When the smile isn't needed anymore And the room just answers with silence I said I was fine I said it so many times I almost started believing it myself But there's nobody left to convince [Outro ] Tomorrow I'll put the same face back on Say, “I'm fine” before anyone even asks Walk back through that same door And become that clown again I'm exactly who they think I am.
