Something's on the line

V6

[Intro] Five in the morning. Black water. Running lights. Then the reel screamed. [Verse 1] The rod went down before I reached it. Line cut hard across the wake. Someone killed the engine. “Let it run.” And somewhere underneath the boat something enormous pulled. [Pre-Chorus] I couldn't see it. I could only feel the whole dark ocean on the other end. [Chorus] Something's on the line. Hold on. Let it run. Take it back. Here it comes. Hold on. There it goes. Something's on the line. And whatever's down there knows I'm here. [Verse 2] Fiberglass bruised my hip. Salt burned my lip. My forearms shook. The drag kept singing. Then the line went sideways and the water opened again. [Pre-Chorus] Someone pointed. “There.” A shadow turned beneath us. [Chorus] Something's on the line. Hold on. Let it run. Take it back. Here it comes. Gone again. Hold on. Silver broke beneath the blue. [Bridge] Then it surfaced. Old scars. A broken hook. Another line from its mouth. This wasn't its first boat. Wasn't its first pair of hands. I looked at the fish. The fish looked back. [Break] Nobody said keep it. [Final Chorus] Something was on the line. Now I could see it. Every place someone had caught it. Every place it had gotten free. I reached down. Cut the line. And watched the water take it back. [Outro] One turn of the tail. Then nothing but the cut line and the whole ocean moving underneath.
