. . . . . EN▶ The song was written specifically for the movie “Officers”, released in 1971. The director insisted that the lyrics should be written by a person who had personally seen the war. After a long search, Yevgeny Agranovich, a front-line poet, was found. The director rejected the idea of involving professional singers, as he wanted the song to “tear the soul”. In the end, the song was recorded by the film's second director, Vladimir Zlatoustovsky, whose male timbre was the most suitable. The song became one of the most famous works about the Great Patriotic War, a symbol of remembrance of the heroes of bygone times and eternal glory to the fallen defenders of the Motherland. The English translation is located below. ----- EN▶ From heroes of bygone times Sometimes no names remain. Those who accepted the mortal fight, Became just earth and grass. Only their formidable valor Settled in the hearts of the living, This eternal fire, Bequeathed to us by one, We keep it in our chest. Look at my fighters, The whole world remembers them in person. Here the battalion froze in line, I recognize old friends again. Even though they aren't twenty-five years old, They had to go a difficult way. These are the ones who with bayonets Stood up as one, Those who took Berlin. There is no family in Russia like that, Where their hero wouldn't be remembered, And the eyes of young soldiers Are staring from the faded photos. This look, like the highest judgment, For the guys who are growing up now. And boys can't Neither lie, nor deceive, Nor deviate from the path.
