[Spoken Word, Male and Female voices] Coming up is our cover of what originally was a 1902 German operetta tune by Paul Lincke, it became a major hit, spending 21 weeks [Spoken Word, Male and Female voices, spoken word only, no singing] and reaching number two. The song is known for its catchy "Shine little glow-worm" lyrics. It was later translated into English in the early twentieth century, to be used in act two of the 1907 Broadway adaptation of the musical "The Girl Behind [Spoken Word] Later, American lyricist Johnny Mercer greatly revised and expanded on Robinson's lyrics, for the 1952 recording by The Mills Brothers, which proved the most popular version, although Spike Jones had already recorded it in 1946. What else, yes, Ballerina Anna Pavlova performed to it. The song also played multiple times in the season 2 of the "I Love Lucy" episodes. Let's see, uhh; "Jean-Jacques Perrey" on his 1960 album, and later, of special note, the soft drink "Dr Pepper" used the song's chorus in its "It's Dr Pepper Time!" ads later in the sixties. Ok, "Kermit the Frog" performed on "Ed Sullivan" in 66, and again on "The Dick Cavett Show" in 1971, and ultimately on The Muppet Show itself. The German keyboard player Klaus Wunderlich recorded an electronic version in 1974, and the song is heard playing on a radio in the final episode of 'Police Squad" in 1982. "Mel Tormé" recorded his own version on his 1992 Christmas album. In Season 8 of "Ninjago", the character Cole cannot remember the whole song, and in frustration sings part of the chorus over and over again.. And today the song is used in McCain Foods's "Good Unlimited" ads since 2009. Well, can't say I recall ever heard any of those versions, but it's interesting to see it's intertwined into our culture. For Public Domain Radio to create a version of it, we have to go back before Johnny Mercer's version, we have to go back to Paul Lincke's original 1902 lyrics.. To be honest, not sure why we're doing this one, sounds a little weird to me, but let's giver a try.. Chorus: Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer! Lead us lest too far we wander. Love's sweet voice is calling yonder! Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Light the path below, above, And lead us on to love. [Verse 2] Little glow-worm, tell me pray, Oh glow-worm, tell me, pray, how did you kindle Lamps that by the break of day, That by the break of day, must fade and dwindle?" Ah, this secret, by your leave, This secret, by your leave, is worth the learning! When true lovers come at eve, True lovers come at eve, their hearts are burning! [Bridge] Glowing cheeks and lips betray how sweet the kisses tasted Till we steal the fire away, for fear lest it be wasted!" [Chorus] Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer! Lead us lest too far we wander. Love's sweet voice is calling yonder! Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Light the path below, above, And lead us on to love. [Verse 1] When the night falls silently, The night falls silently on forests dreaming, Lovers wander forth to see, They wander forth to see the bright stars gleaming. And lest they should lose their way, Lest they should lose their way, the glow-worms nightly Light their tiny lanterns gay, Their tiny lanterns gay and twinkle brightly. [Bridge] Here and there and everywhere, from mossy dell and hollow, Floating, gliding through the air, they call on us to follow. [Chorus] Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer! Lead us lest too far we wander. Love's sweet voice is calling yonder! Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Light the path below, above, And lead us on to love. Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Shine, little glow-worm, glimmer, glimmer Light the path below, above, And lead us on to love.
