Priestess Maresha has only just entered the guardhouse and intended to gather information about Halewyn when an uproar breaks out in the dungeon. Yet it is not Tjark Halewyn who is carrying on down there. Three guards stood outside the cell and wouldn't do much more. No one raised the viewing hatch. No one looked inside. **[Verse 1]** The shouting rose beneath us, they'd heard it all that day. The reeve looked to the jailer, and both men looked away. I nodded to my escort. We took the stairs below. The jailer trailed behind us; the reeve was moving slow. Down where the daylight never reached, where names were left unread, where someone might be locked away and quietly left for dead. **[Pre-Chorus – sharper, controlled irritation]** "You wrote that Halewyn breaks his chains. You called him wild and strong. If that's what waits below these stairs, why have you waited so long? Are you afraid of what he is, or what he might become? And if you fear him quite so much, why has no one even come?" **[Chorus – melodic, firm, increasingly accusatory]** Frost upon the walls, frost upon her door. Three men stood outside her cell and wouldn't do much more. Not one lifted up the hatch, not one stepped inside. They watched the ice take hold of iron and simply stepped aside. Frost upon the walls. Frost upon the floor. And no one looked inside. **[Verse 2]** They hadn't gathered near Halewyn; the trouble lay elsewhere. White branches spread across the stone, cold gathering in the air. I moved the nearest guard aside, drew Savar's sign in air. The latch gave way beneath my hand. A young girl screamed in there. She cried and crumpled to the stone. From somewhere far below, Halewyn raged against his chains, his anger rising with her woe. **[Spoken – sudden, commanding]** "Get the healer! Now!" **[Instrumental drop – low drone, restrained percussion]** **[Verse 3 – quieter, demanding answers]** "Who is she? Why is she here?" I asked them where they stood. None answered till an older guard at last said what he could. "Geseke Auvray. The witch," he said, "the chapel. You have heard." A name, a place, an accusation. Not another useful word. I knelt beside the frightened girl, then turned back toward the men. "How long has she been kept down here? And when did you last look in?" **[Chorus – stronger, frustration growing]** Frost upon the walls, frost upon her door. Three men stood outside her cell and wouldn't do much more. Not one lifted up the hatch, not one stepped inside. They watched the ice take hold of iron and simply stepped aside. Frost upon the walls. Frost upon the floor. And no one looked inside. **[Bridge – tense, almost conversational]** "You knew she could make water freeze. You knew the flames could die. You told me she was dangerous, yet none of you can tell me why she's lying on a freezing floor, half-conscious, left alone. You fear the power she might hold, but won't even check your own." **[Short silence]** "What did you expect?" **[Instrumental tension – dry plucked strings, slow frame drum]** The healer came. I stepped aside and turned to face the three. They looked at one another, as though that answered me. "Bring every deposition, every statement, every name. I want the facts you gathered, not another tale of blame." **[Verse 4 – measured, increasingly determined]** I read of blood beside the chapel, of markings cut in stone. Of witnesses who swore they knew what none had ever shown. Each page supplied a different tale of what they'd found that night. I asked which facts they'd verified. They couldn't get them right. You wrote her name beneath a charge and left the matter there. As though a word upon a page relieved you of her care. **[Quiet break – voice close, almost spoken]** I don't know what was bound to her. I don't know what survived. I only know you feared the girl and never looked inside. **[Final Chorus – firm, controlled anger, no triumphant lift]** Frost upon the walls, frost upon her door. Three men stood outside her cell and wouldn't do much more. Not one lifted up the hatch, not one stepped inside. You watched the ice consume the lock and chose to stand aside. Frost upon the walls. Frost upon the floor. You called her witch. You called her cursed. And never looked inside. **[Outro – low, deliberate, spoken with quiet authority]** "This is no pardon. No judgment that she's free. Have her ready for the journey. She comes to Lightwatch with me." **[Brief silence]** "And see that she's properly cared for." **[Final low instrumental note, unresolved]**
