[Intro] 11:55. Five minutes ain't shit. Unless five minutes changes everybody. [Verse 1] 11:55 on the dashboard, rain running down the glass, Three young fools inside a car convincing ourselves this shit was fast. “Get in.” “Get out.” “No drama.” “Everybody make it home.” That's how bad decisions sound when fear ain't fully fucking grown. My boy Dre in the passenger seat kept bouncing both his knees, Said his mama needed rent by morning, landlord gave no sympathy. Backseat quiet. That was Marcus. Usually loud as fucking hell. Tonight he stared straight through the windshield like his spirit knew us well. 11:56. I said, “We can still leave.” Dre laughed: “Leave broke?” That's the sentence poverty used whenever conscience fucking spoke. I ain't answering. Because sometimes shame is louder than the voice inside your chest. And broke boys mistake desperation for some courage test. [Pre-Chorus] 11:57. Clock glowing red. Rain hitting metal like fingers tapping on a coffin lid. I should've drove. That's the whole song. I should've fucking drove. [Hook] Five minutes before midnight, we still had tomorrow. Five minutes before midnight, nobody's mama knew sorrow. Five minutes before midnight, every heartbeat had a name. Then five minutes turned forever and nothing stayed the same. Five minutes. That's all. One bad turn. One wrong call. By twelve o'clock somebody's whole world was gone. [Verse 2] 11:58. We stepped into fluorescent light. Old man near the counter looked exhausted from another night. Woman by the cooler held a toddler on her hip. That detail never left me. That's the detail makes me sick. Because suddenly this wasn't money. It was people. It was eyes. It was strangers going home later to completely separate lives. Fear made everybody louder. Someone moved. Somebody yelled. I heard something hit the floor. Then one deafening fucking sound turned time to hell. Everything froze. Then moved too fast. Dre yelling. Woman screaming. Marcus saying, “What the fuck?” Old man behind the register leaning. I don't describe the rest. Don't need to. Memory already does. Some scenes get more disturbing when you don't dress them up in blood. We ran. That's what cowards do when consequences learn their names. 11:59 in the parking lot. Rain never felt the same. [Verse 3] 12:03. We ain't rich. We ain't celebrating shit. Money scattered in the backseat looking worthless next to it. Marcus shaking. Dre kept saying, “He moved. He moved.” Like repeating it enough times could make the universe approve. I pulled over near a field. Opened my door. Threw up in rain. Then my phone buzzed. Mama: “You coming home?” Damn. Imagine another family texting someone who ain't ever coming again. That's when the metaphor became real. We ain't take money. We borrowed grief. And grief always finds whoever signed the receipt. [Bridge] Years later, midnight still fuck with me. 11:55? Chest tight. 11:56? I see rain. 11:57? Hear Marcus breathing. 11:58? See that child. 11:59? Wish I drove. Twelve? Silence. That's trauma. A clock becomes a graveyard when your worst memory learns time. [Final Hook] Five minutes before midnight, we still had tomorrow. Five minutes before midnight, none of us understood sorrow. Five minutes before midnight, we thought being broke was pain. Then five minutes taught us poverty ain't the worst thing you can face. Five minutes. That's all. If you feel that wrong turn coming... drive. Fuck pride. Drive. [Outro] 11:55. If I could have one minute back? Not midnight. 11:55. Before anybody moved.
