Midnight Afterglow

[Instrumental Intro] [Pulsing synths, steady electronic drum beat] [Verse 1] Clock out at midnight, rain on the glass Watching the shadows of the city walk past Another shift done, another dream sold Trying to buy warmth out here in the cold The manager locked up the front sliding doors I’m leaving my footprints all over the floors [Pre-Chorus] It’s a minimum wage for a maximum toll Taking a fraction of my heavy soul But the key is in the ignition now [Chorus] And I’m driving away in the midnight afterglow! Got the radio high and the windows low I don’t know where this broken engine goes But I’m leaving tonight in the midnight afterglow! Catching the streetlights blurring by Underneath a pitch-black, electric sky! [Verse 2] My knuckles are pale from gripping the wheel Trying to remember how it's supposed to feel When you aren't just surviving from Monday to Friday When you're actually living and doing it my way The static is humming on the radio dial I think I’m gonna drive for a long, long while [Pre-Chorus] It’s a minimum wage for a maximum toll Taking a fraction of my heavy soul But the key is in the ignition now [Chorus] And I’m driving away in the midnight afterglow! Got the radio high and the windows low I don’t know where this broken engine goes But I’m leaving tonight in the midnight afterglow! Catching the streetlights blurring by Underneath a pitch-black, electric sky! [Bridge] [Music drops out, just bass and vocals] I’m a ghost in the machine, a face in the crowd But inside this car, I am screaming out loud! [Full band crashes back in] I’m screaming out loud! [Synth Solo] [Fast, melodic 80s synth solo] [Chorus] And I’m driving away in the midnight afterglow! Got the radio high and the windows low I don’t know where this broken engine goes But I’m leaving tonight in the midnight afterglow! [Outro] Drive into the dark. Leave the city behind. Midnight afterglow. [Fade Out]
