We Could Simply Say

V6

[Spoken Intro] Prayer. Humanity's direct line to the Creator of the universe. An extraordinary opportunity to express gratitude, seek wisdom, and contemplate existence. Naturally... we mostly use it to ask for things. [Verse 1] "Lord, I'd really like a raise" "Lord, please help my team tonight" "Lord, I need some better weather" Bride says sun, the farmer says rain Seller wants the market higher Buyer wants the price to fall Eight billion people sending requests and somehow God should answer all [Spoken] Your prayer is important to us. Current estimated wait time: eternity. [Chorus] Could You give me this? Could You fix me that? Could You put a little extra in my bank account? Could You change my life? Could You change my wife? Could You please make everyone I disagree with see the light? We ask and ask then complain all day Maybe once in a while we could simply say: "Thank You." [Verse 2] Thank You for the morning Thank You I can breathe Thank You for the people who still choose to stay with me Thank You for the dinner Even if it's not gourmet Thank You that I woke up That's a fairly decent start to any day [Spoken] No request attached. Just... thank You. We apologize for the unusual format. [Verse 3] Then someday comes the judgment And we're ready with our case "I've prepared a list of people You should probably put in place" There's my neighbor There's my boss There's politicians I can't stand There's that guy who cut me off And didn't even wave his hand God says: "Interesting. But we're actually here to discuss... you." [Chorus] "Did You see what he did?" "Did You hear what she said?" "Have You checked my neighbor's choices? Because I've kept a spreadsheet" We point left We point right We explain why we're alright Then the Judge looks down and asks: "Did you ever judge yourself that way?" [Verse 4] Maybe judgment isn't watching For another person's fall Maybe first we check the mirror Before judging them at all Did I feed someone who's hungry? Did I help when someone fell? Did I forgive the person whose mistakes I knew too well? Did I love without conditions? Did I give without display? Or did I spend my whole life judging while asking God to look the other way? [Bridge] Maybe prayer is more than asking For the world to fit our plans Maybe sometimes it's admitting We don't fully understand Maybe gratitude is noticing What was always sitting there Before demanding something better Did we notice what we had? [Verse 5] We ask why we aren't richer While somebody dreams of food Complain our house is crowded While somebody has no room Complain about the traffic On the way to someplace warm Complain about our family then pray we're not alone [Spoken] Apparently blessings become inconveniences when you have them long enough. [Final Chorus] So thank You for the morning Thank You for today Thank You for another chance to choose a better way Thank You for the people Thank You for the time Thank You for this strange little life that somehow became mine And when I'm tempted to judge someone today Maybe help me understand them before I look away Maybe prayer doesn't always need another thing to say Sometimes... "Thank You" is enough to pray. [Outro] Humanity had many requests. More money. More time. Better weather. Better neighbors. Better children. Better parents. Better luck. God listened patiently. Then asked: "Was there anything you actually liked?" [Pause] We looked around. The sky. The trees. The people we love. Another day. ... "Oh. Right." [Spoken] Thank You. No further requests at this time.
