[Verse 1] I was born down in the valley Where the red clay holds you low Trouble came like cold rain And it learned my name too slow My boots wore holes on gravel My hands knew work and stone But I heard a voice at daybreak Saying, child, you’re not alone [Pre-Chorus] So I turned my face toward sunrise Left that burden in the dust Kept my eyes on mercy Kept my heart in trust [Chorus] Higher Ground, Higher Ground Come on, lift me Higher Ground I was lost, now I’m found Sing it loud, Higher Ground (Higher Ground) [Verse 2] Mama kept an old red Bible On the shelf beside the lamp Daddy sang in the backyard With a worn-out travel stamp We’d gather by the table When the supper prayers were done And the whole house rang with gladness Like a field in summer sun [Pre-Chorus] Now the road gets rough and rocky But I know where to stand Grace has got my footsteps And peace is in His hand [Chorus] Higher Ground, Higher Ground Come on, lift me Higher Ground I was lost, now I’m found Sing it loud, Higher Ground (Higher Ground) [Bridge] When the river runs cold and the night rolls in I will not go back where I’ve been There’s a light up ahead, there’s a crown in sight And I’m gonna sing my way through the fight [Final Chorus] Higher Ground, Higher Ground Come on, lift me Higher Ground Chains are broke, glory bound Hand in hand, Higher Ground Higher Ground, Higher Ground Come on, lift me Higher Ground I was lost, now I’m found Sing it loud, Higher Ground (Higher Ground)
