If I might have your attention for just a moment. I realise one shouldn't speak too highly of oneself. It's terribly unbecoming. But occasionally, one must acknowledge the facts. And the facts, my dear fellow... Are rather splendid. A rather remarkable fellow. [Verse 1 – crisp boom-bap, warm funky bass; articulate British rap] I rise each morning looking reasonably refined Not a wrinkle on the collar and remarkably sound of mind I've got manners and a smile and a reasonably decent suit I can talk about most subjects without looking like a brute I say "please" and "thank you" with considerable flair I tip my hat politely and I pull out someone's chair I've never claimed perfection — heavens, what a frightful notion But I've conducted a self-assessment... And the evidence supports the motion. [Pre-Chorus – strings rise] I've got talents, I've got qualities I've acquired a few along the way And whilst modesty is splendid... I haven't got all bloody day. [Chorus – fuller boom-bap, brass stabs] I'm a rather remarkable fellow A chap of considerable charm Quite delightful in a crisis And exceptionally good with the arm— [Beat stop] I mean... At keeping everyone from harm. I'm a rather remarkable fellow A gentleman, through and through I've got quite a lot going for me And frankly, old chap, what else am I to do? [Verse 2 – tighter, swaggering flow] I'm popular with the ladies, though I handle it with grace No need for grand theatrics when you've got a decent face A little wit, a little charm, a compliment delivered neatly And somehow invitations seem to materialise quite sweetly But the finest feather in my cap, if you'll permit the phrase Is being Dad — a role I've rather thoroughly embraced I'm splendid with the children, I've got patience by the ton I'll build a fort, invent a game, and make the whole thing fun I'll answer strange questions with remarkable composure I'll patch a scraped-up knee and offer words of reassurance I'll listen to their stories, however lengthy they may be And when they need a proper dad... Well, that's where you'll find me. [Chorus – warm, triumphant] I'm a rather remarkable fellow A chap of considerable flair I've got a heart that's mostly mellow And an unreasonable amount of hair I'm a rather remarkable fellow I've been blessed with certain skills I can make a child laugh, cook a feast And somehow manage all the household bills [Verse 3 – funky breakdown; playful swagger] Now cooking, I must mention, is a talent of renown Give me onions, herbs and garlic and I'll turn the whole thing round I've got sauces, I've got spices, I've got something in the pan I don't always follow recipes... Because, frankly, I have a plan. A roast of great distinction A stew of some acclaim A pudding so magnificent It ought to bear my name I've been known to make a dinner That produces genuine applause And if the guests request the recipe... Well, a gentleman doesn't reveal everything. [Beat drops] And then, of course, there's romance. I shall endeavour to remain decorous here. But apparently I'm... Rather good at it. [Pause] Quite exceptionally good, actually. [Bridge – piano and strings; sincere] Because beneath all the boasting And the terribly grand display The things I'm most proud of Are the people in my day The laughter round the dinner table The small hands reaching out The moments when somebody needs me And I know what that's about You can keep your medals, titles Your trophies and your fame I'd rather be the fellow My family knows by name. [Final Chorus – biggest arrangement, brass and backing vocals] I'm a rather remarkable fellow And I'm saying it without regret I've been a father, friend and lover And I'm not finished yet I'm a rather remarkable fellow I've had a splendid little run I've cooked, I've laughed, I've loved And I've raised some wonderful ones I'm a rather remarkable fellow Yes, I'll say it once again I've got plenty still to learn, of course But I'm rather proud of who I've been [Outro – drums and bass strip back] So raise your glasses, ladies and gentlemen To perseverance, charm and good behaviour. To the chap who knows his limitations... [Pause] ...and chooses to ignore several of them. [Beat] Good heavens. I'm magnificent. [Final brass flourish]
