The next day, Shelley is stopped in her tracks—Stozi has news. A message has arrived for her… from Leo. Back on Earth, her boy is years older now, and a breakthrough tech called Quantum Echo Relay can transmit calls across galaxies without delay. It’s experimental, unstable, barely authorized—Colony 55’s old receivers can only render fractured audio and flickering hologram shards. Still, in the grainy blue glow, Shelley sees glimpses of a young teen: Leo’s eyes, his voice breaking through static. For the first time since she left home, she feels something stronger than fear—hope. And even though the image jitters and flickers, even though she can’t reach through the distortion to touch him, Shelley breaks down in tears… grateful for every imperfect second of her son’s face in the dark expanse of space.
