Chapter 6: There and Back
[CHAPTER 6 — WESTERN TRAIL BALLAD — 106 BPM — A MINOR → C MAJOR] [LOW MALE BARITONE NARRATOR — WARM, DRY, CLEAR DICTION] [ACOUSTIC GUITAR — UPRIGHT BASS — FIDDLE — BRUSHED SNARE] [SPANISH GUITAR AND HARMONICA ANSWERS] [THIRD PERSON — IDENTIFY EVERY QUOTED SPEAKER] [BEGIN TENSE — OPEN INTO WARM FRONTIER SWING] [NO WHISPERS] [INTRO — 4 BARS — LOW RIDING RHYTHM] [BARITONE GUITAR + MUTED FIDDLE] [VERSE 1] Billy found them west of sunrise, Camped beneath a granite wall; Finn was first to see him coming, Gideon first to hear him call. Torren looked him up and downward, Asked him, "Where the hell'd you go?" Billy answered, "Took a shortcut." Gideon smiled and said, "Just so." [VERSE 2] Abel asked him how he'd managed, Billy shrugged and drank his fill; Kept one hand outside his pocket, Where the silver charm lay still. Grey looked longer than the others, Like he'd noticed something strange; Then a rifle cracked behind them From the high side of the range. [HARD INSTRUMENTAL CRACK] [RIDING RHYTHM ACCELERATES] [VERSE 3] Riders poured from broken timber, Mountain raiders closing fast; Torren shouted, "Take the low trail!" Gideon yelled, "And make it fast!" Down the slope the Serranos thundered, Billy hanging to the rein; Lead came singing through the pine trees, Then the sky began to rain. [VERSE 4] They broke clear below the timber, But the creek ahead ran wide; Horses balked against the water, Raiders gathered on the side. Then a rifle from the valley Spoke once sharp and spoke again; Two hats vanished from the ridgeline— And the shooting stopped by ten. [INSTRUMENTAL STOP] [VERSE 5] A man stood tall beside a fence line, Big enough to shame a door; Hair and beard like winter bramble, Old Sharps rifle forty-four. He called up, "If you're bringing trouble, Leave the trouble where it stands." Gideon tipped his hat and answered, "Grey, Professor. These are friends." [BEAT] The big man said, "Didn't ask." [FIDDLE PICKUP — MOOD LIGHTENS] [VERSE 6] His name was Bruno Ursal, Owned the Bearclaw spread alone; Raised the finest mountain horses Anywhere the West had known. He looked once at Torren's outfit, Looked at Gideon's painted coat; Then Bruno told them, "Feed costs money." Grey said, "Put it on my note." Bruno said, "You have no note." [CHORUS — WARM FRONTIER SWING] At the Bearclaw there was shelter, There was coffee, beef and bread; There were horses in the pasture And clean blankets for a bed. Bruno didn't care for questions, Didn't care much more for Grey; But a traveller who behaved himself Could eat and sleep and stay. [VERSE 7] Billy helped him mend a gatepost, Abel worked a lame mare's shoe; Finn and Kit repaired a wagon, Even Wade found work to do. Gideon offered Bruno tonic, Said, "It strengthens blood and bone." Bruno smelled it, took a swallow— Then took the bottle as his own. [SHORT HARMONICA BREAK] [VERSE 8] That night Billy woke near midnight, Heard the horses crowd the rail; Something huge moved past the window, Moonlight silvered up the trail. In the morning there were footprints, Bare feet crossed the porch out back; Past the fence they grew much larger— Then continued as a track. [LOW FIDDLE — PLAYFUL MYSTERY, NOT HORROR] [VERSE 9] Billy showed the tracks to Gideon, Asked him, "What would make those there?" Gideon studied both impressions, Then replied, "A healthy bear." Billy pointed toward the footprints. Grey said, "Those are healthy too." Billy asked, "You know what's happening?" Gideon said, "And so do you." [VERSE 10] Bruno came around the corner, Billy wisely changed the theme; Asked him which road crossed the forest, Bruno's face lost all its gleam. Bruno told him, "Take the north road. Blackwood isn't meant for men." Torren said, "The north costs ten days." Bruno answered, "Spend the ten." [MINOR TONALITY RETURNS SLIGHTLY] [VERSE 11] Torren spread the weathered map out, Said, "The western pass is here." Bruno tapped the forest boundary, Said, "Then mark another fear. Roads go missing under Blackwood. Men go missing with them too. If you ride beneath those branches, Keep the trail beneath your shoe." [VERSE 12] Gideon asked him, "What's in Blackwood?" Bruno answered, "Plenty, Grey." Gideon waited for another word. Bruno turned and walked away. [INSTRUMENTAL — SPANISH GUITAR + FIDDLE] [FINAL CHORUS — WARM BUT FORWARD-MOVING] At the Bearclaw they found shelter, Found fresh horses, food and rest; Found a warning pointing northward, While their map kept pointing west. At the dawn Torren thanked Bruno, Bruno told him, "Stay alive." Then the Serranos rode for Blackwood— And Billy made it thirty-five. [FINAL INSTRUMENTAL — 8 BARS] [FIDDLE + HARMONICA + SPANISH GUITAR] [BRUNO/BEAR MOTIF — TWO LOW NOTES] [STRONG FULL-BAND CADENCE] [HARD END — NO WHISPER — NO FADE]
