°- YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY (WHAT DID I DO ?) (1930)
You left me sad and lonely Why did you leave me lonely For here's a heart that's only For nobody but you I'm burning like a flame, dear Oh, I'll never be the same, dear I'll always place the blame, dear On nobody but you Yes, you, you're driving me crazy What did I do? What did I do? My tears for you make everything hazy Clouding the skies of blue Oh, you're driving me crazy Crazy Baby Yeah, you're driving me crazy Crazy crazy Baby you're driving me crazy Crazy Oh Grrrrrr! You're making me crazy Oh baby! I'm burning (you're driving me crazy) burning like a flame, dear Will never be the same, dear (so crazy) Will always place the blame, dear On nobody but you nobody but you It's all on you (your driving me crazy) (your driving me crazy) [Outro] How true were the friends who were near me To cheer me, believe me, they knew But you were the kind who would hurt me Desert me when I needed you Yes, you, you're driving me crazy What did I do to you That was "YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY - WHAT DID I DO?" Which had been featured in the 1930 Broadway Musical "Smiles". The lyrics were not originally written for the musical Smiles. Producer Florenz Ziegfeld "interpolated" (inserted) the song into the show after it was already becoming a hit on the radio, much to the annoyance of the show's official composer, Vincent Youmans. It's a Walter Donaldson tune. Unlike many of his other standards (like "Makin' Whoopee this song was completely a solo effort, both lyrics and score. Donaldson was known to occasionally write his own lyrics when a "persistent melody" got stuck in his head... The story goes that Donaldson was visiting Eddie Cantor. Cantor’s daughter, Marjorie, had a mechanical walking pig that made two rhythmic notes, and that rhythm got stuck in his head and was driving him crazy! Those rhythmic notes ended up in the song melody. Of course we drastically detoured the original melody for our cover of "YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY", here at "Royalty Free Radio", but we did, as always, utilized the original song lyrics. Enough of the crazy, well, maybe not, but let's just find out what we have up next.
