[Intro – Slow funk groove, Fender Rhodes piano vamping, hi-hat ticking, wah-wah guitar sliding in and out. Horns enter like slow thunder.] [Verse 1 – Male lead vocal, female background harmonies] I got one foot on the sidewalk The other’s in a puddle of pain Umbrella broke, coat wide open Still I’m standin’ in the rain You said five o’clock, maybe quarter past Now it’s feelin’ like forever’s last Water’s risin’, time moves slow But I won’t leave… ‘til you show [Chorus – Full band, gospel-style call and response] 🎶 I’m waitin’ in the rain (Waitin’ in the rain!) With nothin’ but hope and your name (Callin’ your name!) Lightning flash, heart beat fast But baby, I believe you’ll come at last I’m waitin’ in the rain… (Yeah, yeah!) Still waitin’ in the rain 🎶 [Horn break – Sad, slow descending line, like a sigh. Guitar twitches in bluesy licks.] [Verse 2 – Female lead vocal, male harmony] Told myself, “Girl, don’t be a fool” But the rhythm of love don’t follow no rule You got me wet, but I’m still on fire Waitin’ for you with a soul full of desire This ain’t no movie, ain’t no sweet refrain Just muddy shoes and a love-shaped stain But the beat goes on, and so do I With stormclouds rollin’ in the sky [Chorus – Bigger, fuller, more layered voices] 🎶 I’m waitin’ in the rain (Soakin’ in love!) Holdin’ on like a worn-out glove Thunder talks and my patience walks But I still believe in that sidewalk talk Waitin’ in the rain… (Mmm-hmm!) Still waitin’ in the rain 🎶 [Bridge – Spoken word over sparse groove, male and female trading lines] (Him): They say fools fall fast (Her): But I fell slow (Him): Into the rhythm of your no-show (Her): But I still stand, through every drop (Both): ‘Cause real love… don’t know when to stop [Final Chorus – Gospel soul climax, horns wailing, full percussion] 🎶 We’re waitin’ in the rain (Waitin’ in the rain!) With a groove that can’t be tamed Storm might break us, time might shake us But that funky love… it still remakes us Waitin’ in the rain… Yeah, we’re waitin’ in the rain 🎶 [Outro – Horns echo the chorus melody as the rain sound fades in behind them. Wah guitar whispers, keys shimmer. Vocals fade chanting “Waitin’, waitin’, waitin’…”]
