Airplane Nightmares

V5.5

Flight 247. Departure 6:15 AM. Full capacity. Middle seats included. God help them. Ladies and gentlemen welcome aboard this fine aircraft Where personal space is a myth and comfort is a bad joke laughed At thirty thousand feet where the air is thin and recycled And the person next to you has already made you feel exiled Seat 24B — the middle — nature's cruelest design The window guy claimed both armrests before the seatbelt sign Elbow planted firmly like he bought the whole row And the shade is down — of course — because why would you know What the sky looks like? What the clouds feel like? No no no, we're watching his phone screen all flight The aisle seat? She's asleep before we even push back Head tilted, mouth open, completely off track You need the bathroom — excuse me — she doesn't move Just groans slightly and shifts — that's not a groove You're climbing over a sleeping human being At 6 AM with your carry-on, dignity fleeing Welcome to the skies, population: suffering Thirty thousand feet of carefully organized buffering Fasten your seatbelt, recline your expectations low This is Airplane Nightmares — enjoy the show Welcome to the skies, no exits, no refunds Just you and forty strangers and their various dysfunctions Smile at the camera, wave at the flight crew This is Airplane Nightmares — and it's coming for you Row 18, a child has discovered his feet And the seat in front of him is taking the heat Kick. Kick. Kick. A beautiful rhythm section The passenger in front turns with a look of correction The parent smiles apologetically and then Five seconds of silence — KICK. KICK. KICK again. The flight attendant brings snacks, the child throws his juice The tray table's a canvas, the apple juice is loose Three rows back, a gentleman has decided today That deodorant was optional — a bold choice I'd say The armrest situation in row 12 is a cold war Two strangers, one rest, nobody keeping score The bathroom line stretches back to the wing Someone's been in there for twenty minutes doing — something People shifting weight, staring at their phones Pretending not to notice — everybody knows Welcome to the skies, population: suffering Thirty thousand feet of carefully organized buffering Fasten your seatbelt, recline your expectations low This is Airplane Nightmares — enjoy the show Welcome to the skies, no exits, no refunds Just you and forty strangers and their various dysfunctions Smile at the camera, wave at the flight crew This is Airplane Nightmares — and it's coming for you …Our subject in 24B hasn't moved in forty minutes. He's wedged between two strangers. One arm hanging in dead air. No armrest. No window. No aisle. Just… existing. He considers asking the window guy to open the shade. Just to see the sky. Just once. … He doesn't. It's not worth it. Nothing is worth it at 24B. He closes his eyes. …Someone kicks his seat from behind. Final hour, turbulence hits right on cue The seatbelt sign dings, the bathroom line won't move through The sleeping aisle queen wakes up for exactly one thing To recline her seat all the way — God save the king Behind her, a laptop, a coffee, a soul All compressed into nothing as the seatback takes its toll The child in 18 has graduated to screaming His parents look tired, long past the stage of dreaming Someone's on a call — "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?!" Yes. Everyone can. Every row, front to bow The snack cart comes through like a battering ram Excuse me, your elbow — too late, here I am We begin our descent, the captain sounds fine "Local time is 9:47, weather's divine" The window shade opens — FINALLY — light The window guy woke up to see us land — of course. Right. Flight 247 has landed at its destination. Total flight time: four hours and an eternity. Passengers are reminded to check the overhead bins for their belongings, their patience, and their will to travel again. …The middle seat passenger sat still for a moment. …Breathed. …Looked out the window he never got to see. …And booked his next flight. …Window seat.
